Thank you Franz and Lo. I agree there are not many who can make an onion into art and I think I fall more into the category of the ones that can't!

Jade - just back from vacation - Congratulations on your double firsts - well deserved. There are not too many people who can take something as basic as an onion and turn it into art!!!

Congratulations Jade. I liked this one pretty much - but your open entry even more.

Nicely done with this double win! I ended up making this one my #2, but the Open submission was my #1. Not only am I happy for your wins, but I always like it when my top choices turn out well. -Bill

Billy. I think you may be right about placing the skin in front of the onions. I felt the photo needed something to add "depth" to the three onions which otherwise looked a little "barren" but wasn't sure how much skin, how many, and where. Still wondering if my placement was best since so many have commented on it so it means either it is misplaced or it is well placed to have everyone thinking a bit. I actually think this is a better composition/original photo than my Open entry but anticipate by the comments, that the open entry will place higher which I also thought would be the case.

Una thanks! I picked up on the reflection, too, and worked it more into my second image, in the Open category.

Amberbug, I agree the black background really adds impact.

broph I appreciate your picking up on the dynamic element. Still life without some sense of movement can look a little boring - which is what I fear happened with my Open entry.

Very nice minimalistic take on theme, with an appealing composition and beautiful lighting, I also like a lot the colours; I'm a bit doubtful on that extra loose leaf at the background, maybe would have been better positioned a bit backwards (for not mixing with the onion tail) or, even better, in front of the onions, to avoid that "floating"sensation, and to control a bit better the strong light reflection.
But anyway I still like it a lot, so TT for me, well done!! :-)

Simple yet beautiful. I like the little reflection.

Beautiful still life, great exposure etc and the black background is the perfect, in my top picks

Very nice composition it has a dynamic flow to it.
The reaching green stems seem to be elevating the loose onion skin.
Nice color, maybe a little too red to my eye but still appealing.
Black background makes the photos.
well done.

raf I am so glad you are back. So often your comments have me thinking, "I thought that, too, why didn't I take it out!" I need to think more, "What would raf say?" My entries would be better in the result, I think.

Thanks, Bill. Your images often show your keen eye for subtle insights many of us miss; while all votes score the same, there are some votes I especially value. I'm flattered to have you ranking this one well.

forkcandles I thought exactly as you and actually ranked one excellent image low because it was too animated. But I figured fruit, plants, and flowers all makes some appearances in still life but from a purist perspective, I still agree with you.

two of the onions are still growing so still life?. that said love the colours and detail in this clean shot would be a choice on the veg page of a cook book. no details of the type of onion and also a something to show scale.

Very nice color. Not so easy with these. I especially like the sprouts tailing off along the top. In the running for #1, but for sure the top 5.

simple objects in a simple composition. I quite like it and especially the arc of green. A minor quibble is that the single piece of loose skin looks a little 'forced' and breaks the simple three item arrangement.
