there but somewhere else       ©2010 elliott
Olympus E-620       1st place, 136 points
1s, f9, ISO 400, ?, Manual, Pattern, no flash
Post-Processing: straightened, cropped, cloning to get rid of artifacts from the table, and darkened some of the wall and one of the lights in the background, adjusted her posture (don't ask), resize       Extra Info: camera resting on table at an outdoor cafe. waiting on people all day, she was taking a break. she wasn't moving so longer exposure worked. people in background a blur but it fits the composition and didn''t bother cloning them out. i had shot all afternoon and into the early evening for this challenge. this was one of the last i shot. i had a few keepers that might have done well with the usual voters here. but in the end this is the one i wanted to share.

thanks again. feels great to feel the reception this photo has taken from you folks.
and franz, email me (address on mugshot) i'll send you a few not so familiar shots from the wave. such a unique place and as far from the madding crowd as you'd ever want to be. el

Congratulations el! A very deserved winner! What a great scene.

I like your mugshot too, and wasn't really surprised to see a very similar shot as a winner at a dpreview challenge:

Shots seem to be taken from the very same position, don't they?

I always like it when my first choice ends up first. It lets me know that I am seeing something others also see. In this case, a fine street effort that has just about everything going for it. Congratulations!

i have to go out for a while before voting ends and want to thank you all now for the lift you've given me with your commenting. forgive me for not knowing you all by name. raf.... i don't know where it came from but aptly fits your comment about private moment and stolen moments (always thought that would be a great name for a website). boar, i haven't tried b/w with it yet but will experiment, thanks. and to all, i've looked at each of your galleries or past entries and find so many memorable shots that you've posted, i'm really encouraged by these comments that came from you all. el

edit. i'm back and totally amazed! i'm well chuffed! thanks again so much for the comments.

I would like to see that other keepers... but, no matter how good they are, for me this is a real nice one!! Few things to add to your great extra info that fulfills my own feelings about the pic, even the usual, hard to avoid, yellowish tint of night pics, seems to work greatly here... my #3 fav among a great selection of images, very well done! :-)

Well done in dim light. One of my favorites.

I'm glad you chose this one. Also happy you left the blurred people in, they help make it a street scene as opposed to a portrait. Your plastic surgery was effective and painless.

    ...I like it!....Have you tried a b/W conversion?
...I think it could work...

An excellent candid street shot, full of atmosphere and moodiness. One of my top choices, maybe #1.

Very sensitive scene, beautifully captured. The blur doesn't hurt the soulful message at all. Your picture tells some great stories - very good choice!

thankyou for sharing and in my T5. sometimes you have a picture in mind and then something comes along . i thinnk she was leaning ?

Love it. A private moment lovingly captured, and I say that advisedly as I believe people photographers just love people and so the private moments are not stolen but glorified.

jade. so happy to see this comment come up so quickly and from you who i have come to look forward to and respect the constructive criticism that you offer. i'm just really hoping i don't look in the next days to find that you've edited your comment and ranked it much different from your first impressions.
i really felt comfortable that day (in spite of temps well into the nineties and not much cooler when this shot was taken)..... comfortable with the camera.
on my entry, it just looked right. the lighting diffused on this side and the brighter light from the other side of the alleyway so she doesn't fade into the shadow.
thanks jade,

O.k. I'm intrigued; can't wait for the outtakes and especially the posture adjustment! This is one which I've got ranking either first or somewhere in the lower top ten since I can't decide whether the face is too grainy or not. Everything else technically I really like, from the framing (I'm so glad to see you didn't slice too close off the right), to the long exposure capture, to the depth and great use of rule of thirds horizontally and vertically. And the subject is compelling. Nicely done and a good demonstration of earning a great result by putting in the time to get the shot.
