Panasonic DMC-G1       3rd place, 130 points
1/250s, f6.3, ISO 400, ?, Aperture Priority, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: cropped to vertical       Extra Info: This is our first and so far only hummingbird. Usually they come in September. Hopefully he was the leader of more to come. I got several shots that I am proud of, but the title says it all for this one.

Well done - I can see why you're so obsessed with them - they're so fragile and beautiful.

With or without the feeder it is a great shot! Congratulations on your 1st place. Congratulations on your 3rd place.

Thanks, everyone. I have become obsessed with the hummingbirds in our backyard. I have taken over 300 pics, most of them throw-aways.

Jade, I put a link in the outtakes. I could not figure out how to include the actual photo in the reply. If anyone would like to tell me how, that would be great.

Truly a superior hummer shot - maybe you could post the same with the feeder cloned out in outtakes just so we could see what it look like. Congrats on a fine placing!

Great sharpness, very nice background and a perfect caption. LOL!!!
Very well done!

Very good sharpness. One of my favorites. Would have been still better with more room in front of the bird, but I understand that you didnīt have too much time for framing the pic during shooting.

Another beautiful and VERY difficult capture of a hummingbird!! I would be very happy giving both of you the same points, but had to choose :-( At the end, this one ranks just below the other one as I like a lot the superb detail of the other, but in yours, I like better the beautiful OOF background and having the two wings in the pic... please consider this a tie anyway :-) great image, well done!!

The hanging water drop seems to add a sort of reference and symmetry to the hanging humming bird in this picture. Adds well to the picture. How many times did you shot this? Great photo! Good luck!

Thanks to all for your comments. After the comments about the feeder, I cloned it out and printed. I agree it would have been better without the distraction. I am sometimes in doubt about how much pp is acceptable for the challenge.

As you say, it's the tiny things that stand out in this photo, including that drop of water that is just about to fall. The flowers provide a beautiful backdrop.

Tiny feet indeed! Nice capture, the bits that need to be focused are sharpe, not always easy with flying birds I find! I like the multi coloured background as it compliments the photo. I know it's not easy to shoot without the feeder or even clone it out, but for me that would have resulted in your entry being higher in my top ten. Good luck!

O.k. I so much hate the feeder that I would have cloned it out and if you had done so, this would have been in my top two or three. The capture is extraordinary in sharpness and in body position. The background is perfect, the framing is perfect and the colour, lighting, and clarity is perfect. Perfect illustration of hovering. As it is, the feeder moves this into only my TT. I think it is still one of the best hummer shots I have seen.

Wow - fabulous shot. I love the image you have captured of the beating wings - perfect!

Outstanding capture. I know how difficult this is! Perfect focus and dof. The colors in the background are a wonderful bonus. I love those little feet too. Excellent work!
