Post-Processing: Crop, resize, sharpen       Extra Info: New Year's Day and the Guatemalan National Police receive a call to investigate suspected drug smugglers near their post in an area adjacent to the Belizean border.

Underequipped, underpaid, and underarmed, the odds are against them. Their faces tell the story; from the expression of their colleague, paralyzed by a bullet sent by drug smugglers the year before (he has no use of his legs and, unable to do his job, no income), to the junior officer who understands all too well from even the half conversation he is just now hearing.

The photo for me captured the essence of a hopeless "War on Drugs" waged on our behalf, by foot soldiers most of us don't think twice about, who soldier on and sometimes die to save their families and their children from growing up in a lawless country ruled by drug cartels - and to make us safer; a year after this photo was taken, drugs still flow north, and money from an affluent North America still flows south, funding both sides of the war in which men like these stand on the front lines.

I picked this one since it was something other than a pretty image, and, from a myriad of images I have taken, stood out for me, as among the most meaningful images I captured this year.

A very powerful reportage image & explanation which deserves to be in a newspaper or magazine ! The presence of their wounded comrade is a powerful statement of the dangers that face , I empathise with the two "federales" as they go about their duty & wish I could shake them by the hand. TT
