la luna y las olas       ©2011 elliott
Olympus E-620       2nd place, 113 points
10s, f4.5, ISO 400, ?, Manual, Pattern, no flash
Post-Processing: convert to bw, straighten, resize.       Extra Info: lately the moon has been closer to earth than it has for many years. there were so many people out to watch the moonrise when it was full last week. it was fun even though it didn't look much different.

although dark, the exposure did have more detail but became grainy with hdr treatment so i stuck with this version in spite of silhouetted image.

thanks for looking.

Well done el. A fine effort for this challenge and a fine picture regardless.

wow. thanks. i didn't shoot this specifically for the challenge and hoped it wasn't stretching the parameters of the challenge too far with such dark areas. for composition, it helped that this person is very special to me and also willing to "stand still over there and don't move 'till i say so" without being offended.
thanks again. el

First congrats on a fine finish. And you are right about the viewing angle - never noticed that before. So, now not only do I worry about CRT, LCD, etc. now I have to consider viewing angle - thanks a lot!!! ;-)

    thanks for feedback and comments.
every once in awhile i'll take a photo that i'm pleased with and just can't wait to get home to see how well it looks full size. and i was happy with the results on this one.
i think many of us are guilty of taking photos that are only shared electronically. and that can be a problem sometimes with monitors that may render color differently. and monitor size and resolution factor in as well. mine in particular shows a bit more detail if viewed from slightly above the top of the monitor. my last one had 'sweet spots' for viewing slightly to the sides. and i don't have a clue what this would look like on a crt monitor. i should hook one up at work tomorrow for a look. and along with that, i'm guilty of not printing very often. i have printed this one though with nice results.
again, thanks for the feedback. el

I'm glad you left the photo as it is. It has a beautiful quality about it, especially in black and white

Perfect idea and beautifully executed. There is still lots of detail visible. The shadows are amazing, creating a wonderful atmosphere.
Very well done!

I like this dramatic, contrasty look. Early favourite

Dramatic but way too silhouette for me.

I almost feel blinded looking at the light, looking at something I shouldn't be. I really like the conversion to Black and White, a setting I thought would be particularly hard to use for the topic of backlit, but I think you've achieved it. The light reflection on the water is good as well, Good job
