Thanks, Bill, Lo. Zooker, good eye, and she was actually moored and anchored but I PP'd out the mooring and the anchor chain leading into the water. You can check out the forum where I've posted the original shot.

A worthy winner Jade ! Nice etheral glow. Was the boat tied up, it does not seem to be anchored ?

Fantastic! - Congratulations on your win.

Nice job and congrats. It's not just a snap!

Thanks, RolandB. I think it looks better the larger it is (see outtakes). (And really I was out of the car for maybe ten minutes getting this shot. So not too long but still bone chilling.)

WOW. Congratulations on a well deserved win! Really cool shot, worth battling the cold!

Thank-you for all your votes and comments.

Actually, it was a particularly cold and windy night on the Toronto Portlands so yes, I froze a bit to capture this one. Higher res earlier version of the above (50% of full size) posted in forum.

Well done JadeO . On theme and my number one. Hope you didn't get to cold getting it. The long exposure gave such a wonderful reflection.

Ahhhh! My #2 wins! Close enough! Congrats on a beautiful photo. Of course we will be waiting to see the higher res version!

Thanks, Roland. I thought it not a bad portrait but it still feels a little off/irregular, though maybe that is part of what makes it unique.

Feb 13, 2012
Maybe, but even small it extremely well done! Good luck.

Michael, I think you may be right. I tried various crops and settled on this one since it seemed no matter what I did, the ship looked like it was almost pasted on. 15s can be a challenge with anything that moves but outtakes will help explain how this was easier than most.

Feb 13, 2012
I like this shot but I tried cropping it closley at the stern ( and a bit at the bottom) and that seems to better accentuate the orientation and size of the ship. The missing refletion of the forward light threw me until I realized that it is low down and is shielded by the side of the ship. Congrats on a super shot - especially at that exposure - I'm sure it will do well.

Thanks, again, Bill. Amazing how the 15s exposure works but truth is this grabbed y eye in real time because it was so well lit.

Great night shot with spectacular lighting. A favorite.

Thanks, Lo. Perhaps the 15s exposure time does funny things though it was a surreal scene even in real time. I'm unsettled by the fact that the image on the whole somehow does not look real to me, but it is pretty much as it was yet still I cannot quite figure out why the reflections appear quite as they do here; they are (except where I cloned on the lower bow reflection) exactly as the camera captured them.

Feb 10, 2012
The lighting is beautiful, almost surreal. It's as if a ghost ship is passing through. Love it.

NileLily, thanks. I gave some thought to the composition and framing.
fc I have a fondness for freighters.
mrsawyer If you could see the full size, you'd see the centre light reflects off the water and the light to the left is further back on the port side, therefore no reflection -- but I had the same thought at first as you.

Feb 10, 2012
    Very well composed.

Feb 10, 2012
even so you have captured this one well in detail etc well done

The reflections in the water don't seem to correspond to some parts of the ship. Still a striking photo though. The contrast is good. Looks like some blown highlights on the lighter-colored parts of the ship. Good luck in the voting.
