Post-Processing: crop and resize       Extra Info: my son brought home a chunk of limestone road fill from the bus stop when he was young. i pecked away at it for some time to reveal this piece of coral. knowing where the limestone quarries are in this state, i figure 200 to 500 thousand years since it was a living organism. (for that matter, your gemstones or any pretty stone are immensely older). a family keepsake now.

it was longer before i cut it and made two beads. most will call it coral when in fact it is the 'skeleton' of calcium carbonate left behind when the coral polyps die off. not sure but this may have been part of some type of branching coral or staghorn coral.

and even though i couldn't remember the color of her eyes, furleo should have remembered that this wasn't a piece of cheese around my neck. :)

Pardon the late comment, but what is the part with the holes in it? I see the coral inside.

I thought it was a piece of cheese on a string?

Lots of lessons to be learned from such a deceivingly simple looking photo not least of which how to use light and shadow to add depth. So much to learn....

I had no idea limestone had coral in it. Love the composition and the subject but am not thrilled by the yellow overcast. I can see why it would be a keepsake.

It would have deserved a more affectionate presentation. The stone - being the principal thing in the picture - could have been bigger, maybe as a macro?

Lovely object, well presented with few distractions. Would be tempted to play with some side lighting to see what could happen.

hey thanks for taking the time to comment. i was testing for focus and just mushed this further from the lens, shot again and really liked the pattern created by the leather cord. would have done worse if i had tried to arrange it on purpose.

and yes i have a little collection of shells and mollusks found in limestone but have not found something like this since.

Good job of isolating the subject and displaying it on a complementary and non-distracting background. Basic rules but one often overlooked. Interesting story. I never knew you could find coral in limestone!
