Panasonic DMC-FZ30       2nd place, 184 points
1/125s, f5.6, ISO 80, 84mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash
Post-Processing: 5 image composite, layers; Remembrance Day, November 11, 2012       Extra Info: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

....As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Congrats Jade, on your high finish! (and you said it was rough)

One point! Obviously we need to change the voting system, Lol!

Thanks for all your votes and comments. The real tribute in this one goes to the subjects, not the person with the camera.

Congrats on the high finishes. This was my favorite and I had it #1. Almost made it!

Well done Jade - thank you once again for giving us food for thought

Congratulations - Only one point away is nothing to sneeze at :-)

Congratulations Jade! Sorry for not commenting before the vote ended (I ran out of time) but as you can see it was my #2 and I like to be right. ;-) An extraordinary picture, very impressing.

Thanks, Steve. There is a lot of this which is a bit rough, lol, but extending the transition created a foggy halo look and cropping closer omitted definition. Maybe I should have greyed down the edge but I didn't think of it at the time.

Nice composition for a wide-format image, I especially like how the superimposed soldiers on the sides have eye contact with each other. Great connection to the theme too. My only criticism is the seam between the stone memorial and the rest of the image is a bit rough and could have used some more opacity around the edges.

mrsawyer A valid critique - I agree with you.

A moving tribute. Extremely well done. With five images, I feel it moves into the realm of graphic design though.

Thanks, Bill. But, alas, it is a composite because I couldn't get a decent shot I was happy with and didn't want to do a standard red poppy lit in studio shot.

A fine composite with a strong message. In my top picks.

Lo The little girls looked positively right out of Great Gatsby - I had to put them in! I've been privileged to spend time with Vets from many wars, some my friends. I am most struck by two qualities; a sense that they did what they needed to do and a calmness. The minor annoyances of life seem to annoy them less so.

Phenomenal! What a wonderful juxtaposition of young and old, military and civilian. My only criticism (and it's a minor one) is that there is so much going on in the right side of the photo. The little girls draw my eye away from the veteran, and IMO could have been darkened a bit.
We owe so much to the fine men and women who serve and have served. My heart goes out to families and friends who have lost their loved ones.

fc & hifi Your contrasting views are as expected. Both have merit. This entry was more to pay tribute than to receive same so I am happy with both comments. I do wish I had done better photographically.

on theme and newsworthy. the royal british legion or their equiv would love this picture.

I am very torn about this entry... I think it is by far the best "picture" here. The content is spot on for the challenge, and I highly respect the idea you are posting, but I consider this to be a collage and not a photo. The same thing could be said for HDR stuff etc., but with most HDR's, they are of a single view. With a 5 image collage, I think IMO this is bending the rules a little too far. Your PP skills are very good - again they show well in this picture, but I can't vote on this strictly for technical reasons. Otherwise, this is an excellent composition and I think it pays good tribute to our vets.

Thanks, Oldseadog. I expect we will always.

    Very nicely done. We will
remember them.

littlemav I appreciate your perspective. While my intent was the collage effect which has your eye going all over picking out details rather than focusing on one specific area, you have me wondering whether keeping the two figures in focus and blurring the background might have worked better. My other concept was to illuminate a single poppy on a black field background.

Very emotional composite, my only suggestion would be to separate the busy back ground from your two main subjects. perhaps blur them a bit. My eye has to run all over rather than being drawn to the man on the left and his Father on the right. You did a lot of hard work on this and your theme is very moveing!

Thanks, elliott. If past comments are any guide, l think some will not rank it highly because it is a composite.

Thanks, Michael. I have a special affinity for veterans.

great composition. nice work on the collage. top two for sure after first go around on entries.

Very timely, very moving and very well done. I love the way that every little piece of your montage tells a story.

I've heard it said that some people think that these memorial services glorify war. Ask any veteran of any nation and you will be told that war is not glorious in any way.
