Nikon D90       1st place, 220 points
1/500s, f3.2, ISO 1000, 105mm, Manual, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: crop, NIk filters, detailed, fog, glamor glow, selective coloring. I used several layers and desaturated or lowered the opacity in each. The dust was made better using the nik fog filter over the picture then erasing it over the cowboy... I made several adjustments in RAW like contrast, white balance, curves... and levels in PS... sharpening selective areas and adding a blur to others with the sharp and blur tool in PS.       Extra Info: None

Congratulations on your winning shot! Exceptional. One of my all time favorites.

Congratulations! The 2 people in the background looked a bit strange to me, like they are superimposed in, perhaps bit more uneven fog over them like the rest of the background would make it more natural looking. Something strange is happening with the end of horse's tail too. But overall it's a very stunning image!!

Thank you Elliott, yes I already had it reworked, I kinda ooopst and sent in the wrong file on this challenge. I only edited this about 20 ways LOL... This was my very first color edit, did several in B/W and I titled it best... meaning best over the b/w versions.. but I forgot and figured it was the BEST edit.. and didn't notice the legs until Jade was the first to point that leg thing out... Too many times looking at the same photo with just little adjustments here and there... and then not looking at it since August! Lesson: toss edits when you get the one you want to keep!

littlemav, i liked your fog effect to mimic the dust in a dry rodeo ring and how it sets the action apart from the surroundings. i like that at least three of us saw a connection to norman rockwell. rework this a bit and address the issue of the hooves then start printing this and make lots of dollars!!! like i said in my first comment, this will definitely have a life outside of panachallenge.
cheers.

Oh and to those that ask, Yes he made the ride, this is his first jump out of the shoot, he wasn't in the best position, I really didn't think he'd get-er-done, but not only got er done, got a 2nd outta the ride! And, yes sold the photo to the young man on board

OMG I've been so busy I forgot this ended... THANK YOU everyone who voted, I am speechless!! I"ve been ask to post the origional photo, yes this has been malipulated, cropped in etc... I like digital art, not to the point of loosing the photo, but sometimes with out help a photo is just a snap shot. Ansel Adams the the Master Manipulator, he had to do it the hard way, in the dark room. Today we have such wonderful tools of course if you don't have the photo no matter of PS is going to make it good. Any how, again THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! I will try to find where the outtakes are and post.

A great action pic, I do hope the rider got off in one piece....I've considered this one for a while as you've put in a lot of pp work, possibly to the point of altering the image beyond a "photo" , but that is a seperate discusion to be had elsewhere & still gets a vote.

Great action shot! The dusty background adds a lot of drama to it. One of my top favorites in the challenge, and there were some really good entries. Good work! I'll bet eight seconds seems a very long time for the rider.

Stunning image! All the work you did on this image certainly has paid off well. Somehow, it reminds me of a Norman Rockwell painting. This capture is my top pick! Good Luck!

Very effective processing here to isolate the rider and horse. It almost looks like a painting. Well done!

Like it a lot. If you can't sell it to the local rodeo I'll be surprised.

I really like this shot, in fact it was my default #1 at the beginning of the voting. I ended up not being able to get over the ghostly rear hooves, if this could be fixed with another round of PP it would move back to my absolute favorite!

I like this a lot. It somehow gives me a Norman Rockwell feeling. Nice work on this. I know it took some time to pull the pp off and your timing for the shot was perfect to begin with. Nice work!

This is an excellent action photo, and I would be interested in seeing the original in the forum to be able to appreciate the steps that you have taken to achieve the final result.

This is a great action filled dramatic shot. The PP is too much for me, and I'm not sure I fully understand all the work done here, I guess the end result is what you had in mind but for me it's a bit too much, but the shot is so good I still like it very much.

A rather tedious process to get to this result, but it would not be worthwhile if you had not started with a good shot.

Sorry. I know many will not like an over processed photo and I am one of them. But over processed to me means doing too much in an attempt to make something from nothing, or at least to bring out more than the image is able to yield. But this is not over processed. It is as close to artistically rendered real photography as I have seen and near everything is enhanced by your efforts here. The subject itself is an extraordinary capture at a perfect moment, with just enough detail and motion blur to bring it alive and save it from being a static "frozen" capture, the colour and tone are pleasingly uniform and complementary, nothing has been eye-poppingly left to interfere with the harmony of the total image, and there is gritty realism which pervades and surpasses the artistic PP rendering. My first pick by far and one of the finest on this site ever. That said, I will note two quibbles which almost ousted my vote entirely. First, their is something wrong with those four lower legs, they look pasted on so much so I have to assume this is a composite image - if so, you really need to blend the subject and background more effectively; if not, you need to blend those legs and background in somehow. Secondly, those fellows in the background look completely pasted in so again, some extra attention needs to go to the scaling of the layers, or just pull them out altogether - rails in the background would have been enough and if the fellows are pasted in, then there is no reason to keep them there. I'd love to see the original image(s) in outtakes to see where you started from to get to here. Hopefully my long commentary and first place vote will be rewarded.

Great shot. I'm being a bit picky when I say I think the fog is overdone especially where it covers the tail and the ground. Excellent capture, love the composition and triangle made by the horse and rider. In my favourites for sure.

This is an extremely well done photo. Excellent composition and processing. Thanks for the details on the fog filter. Your application makes it outstanding.

I really like the overall tone. It's a very exciting shot! I can feel the action jump out at me. The men in the b/g really kick this up a level too.

well i'm thinking you got a winner here. not just for this challenge, but one that will have a life outside of panachallenge. i don't know if he did any action like this but it looks like the colors and lighting that norman rockwell tried so well to capture in his art. well done.!!!
