StevenT: Thank you for your compliment. My husband and I scoped out the dunes the night before to see what they were about, then we drove out bright and early the next morning to maximize the benefits of the sun coming up over the hills. Boy, did that pay off. Climbed like crazy to get to the top before the sun hit, and it was so cool the way the light played on the dunes and made interesting lines and shadows. You should go! You'll love it!

Excellent! I love the tones, the texture, the rhythm of the dunes. My top favorite in the challenge. Not sure if you waited for the light, or if was serendipity - but it's a great shot either way. Thanks for sharing!

Lo: Thanks for your viewpoint. I will make a note to keep an eye out for color distortion when I use noise ninja. It IS a tremendous place to visit. I really recommend it.

ellaVic: You are very kind. Interesting that you see it in an abstrat sense. I am a big fan of abstract, but didn't consciously think about this shot that way until you mentioned it. I can see it. Love the idea of the cover! ;)

rafinmelb: Thanks for appreciating the tonal qualities of the shade and light. Also, thanks for your suggestions to make the lighter shades and greens at the top more prominent, and to try B & W. Never thought about B & W...I'll give it a shot! :)

I can see this one on the cover of an "Abstract Nature Photography" book.

Love it. this sort of subtle tonal landscape is something I was trying with in my main entry. I would be tempted to do a little adjustment to the top to bring the lighter shades and the green down a bit. Maybe even a b&w would work.

I'm not sure if the noise reduction has done it, but the colour seems blotchy. It looks like a tremendous place to visit.

Hi Forkcandles. I like the textures and shapes, too. Started up the dunes at 7:00 a.m. so I could get neat light, shapes and textures. Was 650 feet to the top and pretty steep in a few places, but I was definitely rewarded for my efforts with an incredible light display. What you see here is pretty much the way I captured it. Someone with greater photography skills than mine could really have turned out magic.

Jade O: Thanks for your comment of "subtle and sublime." I was so enchanted with the experience of the dunes that I did question my objectivity toward the photos. So glad you apreciate their quiet, majestic quality. Thanks also for the other part of your comment. I agree that "square" my not have been the most pleasing crop for the subject. I like your idea.

Subtle and sublime I want to triple the width and add a horizon (but just barely in frame).

Mepo: Definitely go visit...especially if you are a hiker. You cannot believe the shots that are available early in the morning from the top. As the sun came up, the light and shadows were changing quickly...it was like being a kid in a candy shop. Wonderful place.

Elliott: It's a great place, isn't it! I don't know what was better, the exhileration of making it to the top, or the shots that were possible from there. I hope you go back!!!

I'm seeing green blotches all over which I presume are from the pp but possible from a high iso. Regardless it's a beautifully composed shot and the play o flight is fantastic. Makes me want to visit - great!
