Thank you for taking the time to explain yourself, Jade O. Now THAT'S more like the Jade O I am familiar with! Your comments actually have a lot of merit and will be helpful for me in future challenges. I had an idea in mind when I composed this first as a color photo in much brighter light -- but it did not come out exactly as I wanted, so in a way, this image was an attempt to salvage a color rendition by converting it to BW with darkening. Some of the flaws you point out (indiscernible background) are probably because of this, plus the fact that I thought using my 50mm prime lens would create a more sharper image. However, its narrow DOF at f1.4 made some parts of the image slightly blurry. Your critiques are things that I now think were mistakes to ignore in my final version, so again, I want to thank you for some very helpful observations. (By the way, my son is holding an empty wooden box in which I placed a LED reading light)

Congrats on a top 10 finish. That's five in a row! Very impressive and a credit to your skills!

I agree I should have been more constructive in my comment and apologize for that. The reason this image does not work for me on several levels should have been explained. I would be curious to see how adding a little more sharpness and perhaps a more emotive expression for "mood" would effect the image impression - and certainly the indiscernible background seems to serve no purpose to my eye and the lower left foreground slicing the corner of the frame seems intrusive and serves to pull my eye away from the centre of attention and adds clutter as does the patterned hat and patterned shirt. And the object looks like a laptop opened backwards but because I can't quite tell what it is I'm left wondering what is going on in this image. The black and white was the right choice though and certainly despite all of what I perceive as flaws, I think the image succeeds despite what I see as failings so I'm going to guess this one might well score quite well. (Hope that is better. I didn't have much time for comments and unlike fc who is tied up with hospitals this weekend I've been tied up with something a little further down the pipe - a funeral - so I did the best I could. Maybe sometimes better not to comment at all than try to rush just to get something in.)

You've created a nice effect with PP that matches the theme very well.

Jade O: you certainly have a right to your opinion, but I find your comment gratuitous and unhelpful.

Doesn't work for me on so many levels.

Very good idea and an interesting technique to create the rays.
Could this work with sun-clouds-landscape shots too?

He looks quite happy with what he found, or maybe surprised. Lighting works very well.

This kind of reminds me of the Poltergiest movie, I'm looking at this picture waiting for him to get sucked into the screen. The B&W with light from screen gives it an eerie feeling, as does the look of wonderment on his face. Adding to favorites.
