  #136 Where You Live
Entry 10 of 26

Sunset Surfers       ©2013 Edward
Nikon D7100       10th place, 96 points
1/179s, f8, ISO 140, 16mm, Manual, Center Weighted Average, no flash

Post-Processing: Added fill-light; increased vibrancy and contrast.       Extra Info: I live 1 block from the Pacific ocean of the Monterey Bay in California, 7 miles south of the coastal city of Santa Cruz -- AKA "Surf City, USA". This young couple exemplifies why the area has earned this title. I watched them exit the water, and waited a full 10 minutes at the top of the stairs, hoping I could catch a shot of them in the last glowing light of the setting sun as they ascended.

I was hoping for a little better placement because I like this shot so much myself (yeah . . . so what do I know?). However, what you did say, Jade, was so gratifying I almost responded that it didn't really matter where my entry finally ended up because your opinion (which I value highly) was reward enough! Forkcandles: your observations were quite astute and I was pleased you saw what I was trying to do. Thank you all for your comments.

Well, at least it made top ten but for me, I repeat what I said earlier about the best in both categories photographically speaking IMHO.

P.S. Notice I didn't say, "I don't like it!" ;-)

What an amazing expanse of ocean. Great composition! The inclusion of the surfers really grounds the photo, and the exposure is perfect.

well worth the wait. the girls head is in line with the setting sun.
the foreground is the important part of the picture and the sunset is part of the picture and not the reason. the stair case handle run through the picture taking your eye to the beach.
the girl is not happy about the picture, well the hairs a mess!!!!

Mrsawyer: I'm not really sure which one I was more focused on, but I am unclear if you mean you would have liked to see more details of the second person's face -- or just a more expressive look? It is definitely much easier to clearly see more details in my original 6036 x 4020 pixel image.

A difficult lighting situation for sure. You have done an admirable job. It would have been nice to see the 2nd person's expression more clearly. Is that where you focused? Just wondering.... In my favs.

Really the best of both categories for me. A really fine shot and love the use of the 16mm.
