Obviously I thought this would finish higher - I had it 5th. You did a great job here. Re the crop -I like the bracelet too, I was simply exploring other crops the way I do with my own pics. My way of looking at different crops is with two "L" shaped pieces of cardboard. You can move them all over and still leave the original untouched if you are working with a print. They work well on my monitor as well.

very impressive first attempt at portraiture!! i would think getting a young person to cooperate for a portrait sitting would be harder than doing a dragonfly shot or pet animal shot for sure. lighting and composition great. hope she likes this shot as much as you. well done.

Well done - portrait photography is so hard to do. You've succeeded in capturing a natural pose of a lovely young girl.

You have captured her personality nicely. Maybe a little light to back fill the shadow on her face a little and I would remove the corner of the chair.

I really want to learn more about portraits so appreciate all your comments.
forkcandles: I am surprised at your suggestion of 5.6. Everything I read said to use as low an aperture as possible to get the spot-on focus on the face. I wish I could have got further away from the backdrop but I couldn't without major furniture removal! I did use a reflector but obviously it was not shining on the hair. I'll look out for that next time.
mepo: I'll watch the speed next time. It didn't really come to my attention until the model had gone home. Big questions about the cropping. One of my advisors made a print and everyday cropped it in a different place. He came to the conclusion like me that it was a better constructed photo with the space at the side. I love the bracelet. I think it says "young teenager". The windows were a problem. I should have realised you'd notice it but house renovations were not possible. I think she must smile on one side because the left side is OK but I agree with you when I cover the one side as you suggested.
Peanut: She was probably thinking "Get on with it".

Beautiful. I wonder what she is thinking.

Great job, first time or not. Of course you are cheating by having such an attractive model. I cropped this a lot tighter and eliminated the bracelet completely. This removes a distraction and also reduces the amount of grey in the background. One little niggle (imho) is that the windows reflected in the eye don`t work - it should be a single reflection not divided into panes. The f1.4 appears to work very well - all the important details are sharp and detailed. I would have reduced the iso for another shot after seeing that shutter speed just to improve the resolution as much as possible. Next time ask her to smile ever so slightly so that the right hand corner of her mouth is not turned down. If you cover half her face with a piece of paper I think you will see the difference. Please excuse all the comments - it`s just that I find so much of the shot very attractive. The green shirt for example is perfect for her skin colour and also brings out the colour in her eyes. Kudos to you and your model.

a nice result. look forward to seeing more.
some suggestions
move the model forward this will blur the background for you
use a aperture of 5.6 and let the camera worry about the speed which can be as slow as 30th
use a white reflector on your left hand side out of the picture this will fill in the hair on left.
crop a little on the left hand side

why i like this
the window light has given you shape
the arm has balanced the hair on the left
sharp eyes and the shadow down the nose on the left has given shape to the face
the reflector will allow this happen as well
good luck and make a print and hang it on the wall

Thanks Joanna and KJW. The hair was resting in her lap, far too long to get it all in the photo.

For your first attempt at a portraiture seems did a nice job. Like the pose of your model and the look on her face with the hint of a smirk. Seems she maybe having a hard time keeping a straight face. Looks like her hair is very long to bad couldn't have captured it without having to cut the bottom off but still a wonderful entry.

Beautiful. The grey background is a little off-putting but as it is very soft it seems to work OK.
