A classic portrait of a beautiful swan.

Composition good, but I would have liked more brightness here.

A classic shot well composed and nice timing on the wings, but a bit too blue on my monitor.

I like the detail of the feathers and the rippled water. It would be nice to have a bit of light in the eye, but you can't have everything I guess!

You make me laugh, Jade. I wouldn't necessarily disagree with your assessments - on all accounts. However, I really did not have any alternative animal shots for the Open category (except maybe my house cat, who I would have thought is even more mundane and over-done as a photography subject). Kind of threw this in, hoping for the best.

A beautiful swan shot very well taken. If anything, it is getting hurt in my rankings simply because it is another beautiful swan shot very well taken. Not to imply this is easy; I've shot a lot of swans and don't think I've managed what you have here in lighting, clarity, composition, and detail. It is just so perfect it is almost Disney.

mrsawyer: this was shot late in afternoon, almost sunset. The pond where swan lives sits in a small ravine, so the area was completely in shadow, which darkens the colors (not to mention his dirty neck!).

You have captured the swan well and in fine focus. The rippled reflections in the water make a lovely background. It seems that white balance was off a bit, though. What time of day was this shot?

forkcandles: Wished I could have found a cleaner Swan, but he is the only one living in the pond. I think he is a rescued animal, as one of his legs seems malformed. I almost called this image "Swan With Dirty Neck". I'm pretty sure the large pond he lives in is not polluted, but there's lots of muddy parts where he might have collected some.

a picture of swan dealing with some pollution judging from the muck on his neck[ the black ball on the nose indicates its a male as they have bigger ....than the female
nice frame to the picture
