White Chairs       ©2014 SteveBee
Panasonic DMC-G5       3rd place, 164 points
1/40s, ?, ISO 400, ?, Aperture Priority, Center Weighted Average, no flash

Post-Processing: Exposure, contrast, straighten, clone a small spot       Extra Info: At the museum gallery I was struck by the whiteness. Was shot with very wide angle lens which is the reason for some curvature of the verticals.

Congrats, great shot! I loved the curves.

Congrats on a fine finish. To answer your query, the reason I'd make the straight elements straight is because to me, the beauty of those beautiful curved chairs and table is the contrast they make to the non-curved elements. As a for example, I find the chairs further back more pleasing as they stand contrasted against the straighter horizontal floor boards. The closer two or three chairs, while equally or more dramatically curved, have some of the dramatic curve effect lessened because they stand against a warped and curved background of floor boards. At least that is how it looks to me.

This works for me - the lens effect seems to draw me further into the picture. Well done.

Love this. A great use of the very wide angle lens

The lens distortion complements the odd shape of the chairs nicely. I also love the whites against the warm wood color.

It is that curvature which makes this outstanding for me as it takes the eyes right into and through the whole composition. It also echoes the shape of the chairs.

I like the perspective you have chosen. It's amazing how the warmth of the wood floor offsets the starkness of the white, and the curvature caused by the lens really adds interest.

Hi Jade O., this was shot with a fisheye lens. I'll take your word for it that it could be fixed in post processing, but defished images often change the perspective in ways that are less than pleasing. I tried using Lens Correction in Lightroom but it didn't make a big difference so I left it like it is. Other than your expectation that certain lines should be straight, how do the curves detract aesthetically?

I'm going to say the curved vertical and horizontal elements are a negative and you could have fixed those in pp. The subject chairs and floor and your framing of the shot is very good.

Despite all the curves I think this is an excellent photo. I can imagine it catching your eye at the time.

like this one for shapes and colours complimenting the white of the chairs
I would have liked the small stool in the space by the bottom chair but curators dont look after photogs

I like what the wide angle effect does for this image. It has created a much more interesting perspective.

Powerful pull in this perspective, the curvature and the figure at the end adding to the succion . Great image!

Very cool and stylish. The curving of the lens and the chairs fit each other. One of my fav.!

A really eye-catching composition. I enjoy the way you have made it a study in white. The very wide angle adds a subtle curve nicely to the subject.
