Cardinal       ©2014 mbbin2
Panasonic DMC-FZ200       7th place, 122 points
1/100s, f4.5, ISO 400, 600mm, Aperture Priority, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: Converted from raw, cropped and resized in cs6.       Extra Info: This was taken in my favorite place for shooting cardinals. At a photographer's blind where we have our club's monthly meeting. Tried to remove the branch in front of bird, but cancelled out. I had rather have it sharp with the distraction.

Lots of comments and a solid finish. I think you're developing a talent for bird shots.

I'm of two minds about the branch. It does add some depth perhaps but it is also a distraction. I'd like to see it cloned out along with whatever the bird has in it's mouth. Love the bright eye and the pose of the bird.

I like this photo. Love the bird's expression. I don't think I've ever seen a redder bird so perfect for this challenge. Prune that twig for a perfect shot next time! :)

agree with your decision to maintain sharpness of bird/not remove branch. Seen lot's of bird shots over the yrs, so for me, the branch is not a distraction but rather a natural part of the cardinal's world, and adds to the story (and distinguishes it from just one more sharp, bird shot). Good job.

Nice shot. These guys always find a way to be behind a branch when you want to get a natural shot. At the bird feeder I usually can get a shot with everything else.

Lovely detail in the feathers, and you've managed to catch light in his eye. Great DOF against the blurred background.

Nice picture. Good sharpness, well exposed.

Oh that darn branch across his forehead! I think you could have brought out the red a little bit more.

A lovely bird. But I am reaching for the pruners to remove the twig that goes in front of the bird. Good shot none-the-less.

birds use branches to sit and hide behind for protection . a good result
don't know about the white bit at end of the beak, its not to defined to determine whether its nest build or food

This reminds me of a shot I submitted for #102 B&W with a colour focal point. That one got 1st (lucky). Hope this one does as well for you. A nice bird with crisp detail and effective bokeh. A high favorite for me.

Branch aside, it looks a bit washed out or over exposed.

Good call on not going soft with the clone out attempt but still best without any branch. Still it is o.k. as it gives depth and a peek-a-boo element so it isn't all negative. Nice bright eye, tense pose, dynamic head turn - natural and beautifully captured.
