Guess I'm a little rough around the edges, like it that way :-). Congratulations on 9th!

Anthony: You must be a connoisseur. That particular 'room was sans pareil, it had exquisite, piquancy to die for. How did you know :-)

Congratulations on the TT, I ranked this at no.2.. I like the space. My favourite mushroom head was the one sticking out at the bottom right, without the space it wouldn't have had this impact on me.

Thanks for the comments; nice to get.
Choosing the crop and the amount of background to balance the main object is an interesting part of the process. My reasons for this one were:
I didn't want the main object centered, and I wanted enough empty space so as not to crowd the mushrooms; I want to show the very small heads lower in the bunch to add variety and interest, and to catch the light coming from below which I though added some depth to the image.
Again, I appreciate the comments and the alternate views. They are great learning tools.

Nicely lit, and with good DOF. Like the dark/light contrast, but would prefer a tighter crop on the mushrooms themselves.

a bit more cropping and less black.

wonderful shapes. Like the nonuniform lighting and the variable color result

These are cultivated, the wild would be a different color, they both have medicinal qualities. Good shot, in my favorites

I like the lighting from below and the contrast against the solid black background.

Striking image. I like the composition and enjoy the landscape orientation of the frame with the vertical stems, which create a nice balance. Most will be tempted to do this portrait orientation, I commend you on fighting the urge! Well done, in my TT!

John: You're missing the whole point - They are beautifully soft and delicate. That's how they are in real life. I know you like tone mapping and HDR but some things taste better just the way they are :-)
KJW: Thanks. I used a single light from underneath to help keep the background dark.

I know you got them in focus, everything looks soft though.
