Extra Info:
In North America, Argiope aurantia is commonly known as the black and yellow garden spider, or writing spider, because of the similarity of the web stabilimenta (the zigzag pattern above and below the spider) to writing. It swings its web forward and back to ward off predators and photographers!

This is a great shot of the spider. The background was little too distracting.

Thanks for the comments! I actually had another version without the bright background, but submitted the wrong photo. The site administrator, mrsawyer, would not let me exchange it because the entry period had ended!

Great photo of a spider! The background and clipped highlights is a bit distracting.

Good Close-up, bright background on right side distracting. Thanks for the Extra Info, shot some of these myself but just called known them as "spiders".

I've never seen a spider like this, I'm happy to say. Very interesting web formation, striking colour.

With a slight change of perspective you could avoid the too bright shrubbery in the corner which is distracting and put the spider in a more central location which would not be inappropriate for this subject.

a "swinger" . nice capture. the picture however does not give any clues to size

Super shot - great detail and good choice of dof that not only highlights the spider but also gives a subtle hint to it's environment. Thanks also for the extra information which was interesting and educational!
