Canon EOS 7D       27th place, 37 points

Post-Processing: played with numerous versions of this photo. Converted from raw to tiff, the horizon was not level and I didn't have enough room at the stern of the boat to just rotate, it cut off the stern. I used a level guide line and either cloned the sea or cloned the sky to get my ocean level. I did a faux tonemapped image, and ended up converting that version to B&W. Cropped, adjusted the contrast with curves (I think), then sized and smart sharpened for the challenge.       Extra Info: Our local yacht club runs a racing series during daylight savings time here. Wednesdays at 6:00 is start time.

Thanks to all for the comments.

Mepo, the boat is not heading to the start, it's heading for the finish. The mark they round is the buoy in front of Port Hueneme after a downwind spinnaker run. They then have to head back up wind, tacking the one mile back to Channel Islands Harbor for the finish line.

Thanks JadeO (I had played around with your suggeations), yeal and all of the rest for your thoughts and suggestions, much appreciated, thanks.

I notice ysal and I both seem to go for the fine art photography images. He didn't have the same negatives I had with the rocks but we agree on the quality of the sailing shot.

Nice B&W, I love the angle of the sail.

Wow, that's a lot of pp work but it turned out very well. One would have to love boats to go out in the weather :-) I get an excellent interpretation of people heading out to get in the race. Kudos all around.

I was going to say that you left the boat too close to the edge til I read your post processing-now I know why. Nice recovery to fix the horizon instead. I think you could have gotten away with bumping up the contrast a bit more.

Nicely composed and dramatic sailing scene. The proximity to the rocks is an important element, as is the diagonal line of the sails.

the yacht is in the right place with some open sea in front of it
the use of the oof rocks have also contributed to the picture

I like everything in this except the rocks. I would have either cropped it on a line just above the highest rock (though it does make the bottom of the photo look a little crowded) or about a third of the way down from the top of the highest rock and cloned in some sea. If you'd done that, this would have made my top 5. As is it is out of my rankings. It has all the hallmarks of gallery quality sailing photography.

I appreciate your difficulties. Same sort of thing has happened to me where I didn't shoot wide enough to give me room to properly straighten. The boats stern is still too close to the edge. I like the B&W processing though.

The out of focus rock do draw some attention, but other than that well captured! The post processing has created some banding in the rocks too. Probably from the tone mapping and curve combinations.

Like this and the composition make a feeling the yacht is turning to miss the rocks in the foreground
