I was referring to the painting and I think this is a creation of folk art if nothing else. The pattern is clearly something created for an artistic purpose.

Congrats on your finish! Quite impressive, and an impressive record, 2/3rds of your entries are winners! I'll bet no one has ever done that before on this site!

Great shot, Neil - If I stare at it long enough, I get that "figure/ground " effect where the lower cubes invert

Thank you very much all :-) . I'm delighted to have won!

As for contrast, it was the standard adjustment. I increased it slightly overall and a bit extra selectively in the middle of the closest side. The sharpening also helped to increase the contrast somewhat.

As I was shooting JPEG, I tried to keep the lighting as flat as reasonably possible to avoid any blown highlights and then increase the contrast later as needed. Neil.

Congrats Neil! You are making 1st place your nesting spot!!!

Contrast change? Was that some special change or a typical increase of contrast?

Puzzling indeed how you shot this. Love these kind of optical illusions.

Like how this shot has a 3D effect & dark background seems to be a good choice as helps bring out the details in the wood.

Thank you very much all. You honour me greatly comparing it to Escher's work :-) . It was the kind of look I was aiming for.

Beautifully done. Evocative of Esther. It's intriguing how the thumbnail gives such a different appearance to the composition.

This make me think of an Escher jigsaw which I love. Beautifully crisp and well composed.

I really dig it. Seems to just pop out of my monitor, looks like I can touch it.

Very Escher-like. I love the details on the wood and the lighting is excellent. Well conceived.

Good capture with a nice light/dark balance and an almost 3-D effect.

I'm so pleased you like my choice of subject. I knew when I saw it in a charity shop it would come in handy for a challenge one day.

Beautifully set up to achieve that look of floating in space - great detail and exposure. High in my pics.

Thanks for the comment Jade but I'm confused by the second part. I guess by the 'other entry' you're referring to either the fish or abstract painting? I would not count my subject as being someone else's art. It is just a childs/adults handled wooden puzzle and in no way a work of art. It cost me pennies in a local charity shop. I will put photos of it in the outtakes to show you what it really looks like.

Interesting play of light and shadow but like another entry, I'm struck that it is mostly a photo of someone else's art.

Thank you all for the great comments. I'm really pleased you like it :-) .

kerszkavet - I uploaded several slightly different versions of this photo (sorry admin ;-), as the photos appearance on Photoshop Elements 9, my PC's photo viewer and in the challenge, are all somewhat different :-(. I kept on increasing the contrast on Elements as when I uploaded it, it kept looking flatter. How it looks to me now on Panachallenge is not quite how I wanted it to be, but I didn't want to push my luck too much with Lo, and as you say different monitors would see it differently anyway.

I like the texture of the wood - wonder if highlights could be dropped slightly to help bring it out, but appreciate that getting the right exposure must be difficult, and viewers' monitors will also play a role!

great subject and composition, and works really well in b&w

    Thanks very much both :-).

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by 'the bulge'. I guess I know what it looks like though ;-) . The puzzle is like 2 four sided pyramids bottom to bottom if you can imagine that. I'll put a photo of it in the outtakes for you to see :-) .

I've recently bought this camera to enable me to enter the Main challenges and to have a camera small enough that I can carry around with me. After a bit of research I've noticed that this is the first photo ever to be entered in a Panachallenge using this camera! I hope I've done the right thing buying it. What do you all know about this camera that I don't? ;-) .
