Hi Anita: As you probably know. I've started a forum poll on a proposal to change the voting rules. I wanted to give you a short explanation of why I did that because I have been a big fan of your work and because I will forever be grateful to you for introducing me to impressionism. I wanted to assure you that my proposal was in no way intended as personal criticism.

I simply realised that not voting was resulting in friction that we did not need. I also felt that running a forum on the subject without any objective would probably result in even more hurt feelings.

I hope that you might support my proposal as I suspect you are very busy with your own business and might miss registering a vote again in the future. I seem to remember that you have already stated that you were not overly concerned whether your entries won or not. With my proposal, it would not matter if you didn't vote (accidentally or on purpose) because no one but yourself would be affected. You would still get a lot of good comments. The only difference is that your entry would not included in the vote.

I did vote in the Open but my vote was not registered. I have to assume it was my own fault and will be double checking in the future. Fortunately, my entry did not rank very high so my error did not affect the outcome of the challenge.

I hope you agree that my proposal would save a lot of friction in these cases. I'd love to know what your opinion of my proposal.

I'm looking forward to your choice for the next challenge. If it's anything like your choice of impressionism, I think I'll be on another steep learning curve.

Best wishes, Michael

Gee Anita, if I can get as good as you then I sure hope I get lots of critiquing! (Somehow I think your skill, artistic vision, and dedication have a lot to do with it too, but again appreciate your comments).

I'll answer here. I noted you commented on both my entries and value your critique. You can see what I started with in both cases in outtakes. I've posted there. But I agree with your comments, I could have done better and I learn more from the constructive criticism more than the complimentary praise -- though I appreciate both, ha!

I missed you comment pre-edit but want to say more clearly that there is absolutely no requirement to vote and I defend your choices in this regard.
I accept any reason and recall what you said previously on the subject and accept you view as valid and sincere. No need for you to feel otherwise.
I commented a bit longer on lq's entry if you want to read more there.

Now back to the important stuff....I thought about the LaCoste logo after reading another comment.
I did not find it distracting and think it adds an element of candour and realism to the image.
I can see how removing it also wouldn't hurt.
So in the end I say photog's choice and no matter what you have made the right one as the results show.
Once again, fine image. Congrats.

BTW... Nice photo... And well done on your win.

Neat, you make valid points, and agree that there is no rule to enforce voting and it is totally your choice. However could I ask what harm does it do to vote / rank at least 5 photos against each other? This challenge exists to compete against the photos entered, not necessarily against a professional standard. All photographers started somewhere, some are better than others, but many are, like myself, are still learning which I believe still deserves a rank against their peers even if the photo isnt of professional standard, you are also totally welcome to then comment and supply your advice if you don't think it is perfect... The commentary (I saw you commented on some) together with the ranking / votes gives the entrants a good idea if they are on the right track.

Thanks for the nice votes and comments.

I wasn't intending to enter this challenge, but I did a portrait shoot with this nice family, and their son Joe pictured above was such a great model I thought I'd use this picture of him. He's the same age as my son, but my son is over me taking his photo now ;)

Neat. I think lq meant to say, Did you not vote?
It may be that you didn't have time, didn't feel like you were in a position to, didn't feel confident in doing so. So I won't prejudge.
But I will say if the number two finisher, 2 points behind you didn't vote, she would have won.
I am always pleased when I see that my top five votes placed in the top 5 as happened here.
It makes me feel I earned my top ten ranking though that is purely my own personal feeling and has nothing to do with how the sometimes wonky voting produces results.
Really nice image. Congrats all the same. This is a worthy winner.

I wonder what he is thinking about? Good portrait and use of black and white. I like the way the wire fence diapers into t blur. Good background.

A really beautiful and sensitive shot of a young man looking to the future. I see confidence, strength and determination. High in my picks.

    well on original theme
a good strong black and white with the background falling out of focus and strong eye contact
one distraction is the logo maybe a bit of softness required

What a beautiful portrait! I love the background too - love the way the fence dissolves into blur. My number one.

Excellent portrait, though the young man no doubt qualifies, it would be better if the image more clearly said "millennial". (I. e., with the neck chain, Lacoste shirt and longish hair, it could even be from the '70s.)

Lighting is fantastic, composition is very good and you focused well. Processing is nicely done, including the dodge and burn. Overall a good image, it just reminds me of a advertisement, a little posed.... Maybe a Lacoste advertisement? The problem with posed is it often doesn't say much about the person (subject) but rather more what the photographer conceives as a good photo. Quite ironic that a good photo that connects with the viewer is often where the photographer is not involved in the emotion or setup. This is the reason that people seem to "like" badly executed photos on Facebook which show natural emotion, more than a well executed photo. All that said, I think this is well executed and will make my top 5, maybe it is because of gaze which is captured so well. I do think cloning out the logo would have helped a lot to remove the commercial feel.

Quite good...unsure about the knee but I think I like it as it is.

Great portrait - very honest shot capturing a calm and thoughtful expression. B&W was an excellent choice. Very well done in all respects.
