Hey human, why are you upside down?       ©2016 ysal
Panasonic DMC-GX7       3rd place, 137 points
1/100s, f6.3, ISO 500, 120mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, flash

Post-Processing: Cropped; brought out brightness of the insect and darkened the background; increased saturation; adjusted midtone; denoised and sharpened; resized.       Extra Info: I found this small praying mantis on a rose bush. While I tried to get a good composition, she hid behind the leaves, then peered out at me upside down.

ysal, my solicitor said that what was said was not an accusation, it wasn't even an allegation, it was merely a suspicion and I couldn't make a case of it, ha ha. Anyway, no harm done, and well done to you in this challenge.

Thank you soooooo much!!!! As some of you mentioned, this is not really a coincidence but a natural occurrence of camouflage. But this was the best I could do for the challenge and I liked the shot.

Jade - I already applied quite a bit of PP to "unflatten" this image, but I probably could have gone more.

A.N.Other - I also hate chopping off the antenna, but she had such long ones that including both in the frame really threw off the composition.

Thanks again everyone!

If I have some time, I might play a bit in PP with this...but for now, congrats! Cute title + unique presentation + good technical skills = top 5 ranking!

Nice find! Well-composed, though a little disorienting. Good bokeh.

Cute bug! I wish his antennae wasn't cropped off at the end. GL.

I like the unusual aspect of this photo - it provides a lot of interest. The colours are beautifully matched, and the soft background really finishes it off nicely. In my TT.

There are matching colors both in greens and reds. You succeeded well with the composition.. In my favorites.

Lovely photo with really good colour matches - not just the greens but the bits of red/brown as well. (I guess that's what camouflage is all about.) High in my faves.

Thanks Jade, the original was much, much flatter and I applied quite a bit of PP just as you described to get to this point. I guess I should have done more, it looked OK on my monitor.

    Wonderful title by the way...

This has all the compositional elements, the great background bokeh, the great framing, the exotic subject, the natural yet surprising element of the upside down pose, and the wonderfully expressive head, so why don't I like it so much. Because the lighting is flat flat flat. A little work to darken the background so the subject pops more and maybe, just maybe a tad more contrast, and you'd be on the cover of National 'Geographic. As is, I am just not sure where to rank this one. In summary, Great shot, needs PP.

Thanks Robert, I tried rotating it in several ways and I ended up liking the original position the bug was in.

    I meant clock-wise

Nicely done. Did you consider rotating 45 degrees counter-clockwise?

Judging by the way she's looking at you, it's a good job she's not carnivorous. Nice clear shot with both in-focus and out-of-focus greenery.

Thanks aoc, yes I agree this is more of camouflage than matching colors, but I couldn't find anything better to enter....

As for turning it upside down, I decided to keep it this way since this is how I found her and I thought it gave the image different "twist".

Good capture of the mantis, with nice matching reds and greens. However, I expect that its colors are more the result of deliberate natural camouflage than of coincidence. (BTW, did you consider turning the picture upside-down?)

A very fortuitous matching of leaf and insect in two colours
