Canyon       ©2016 kerszkavet
Panasonic DMC-FZ150       8th place, 86 points
1/320s, f3.7, ISO 800, 164mm, Shutter Priority, Center Weighted Average, no flash
Post-Processing: 16:9 crop to try and reinforce the idea of landscape.
conversion to black and white as I wanted a monochrome shot.
decreased overbright highlights, adjusted black levels and contrast to give more definition
high pass filter to sharpen.
Extra Info: Thank you to panachallenge for remembering ambaker in this way.

My favourite of ambaker’s photos were those he entered for #120 High or Low Angle Shot, especially the open entry which had great contrast between the sky and the grid, the composition, the colours and textures of the pipes, and frankly the sheer idea of seeing that view and working it into an outstanding photo.

I tried to channel three other of his photos – 133 Main, Mini25, Mini29 – by looking for subjects that highlighted shapes and patterns, in black and white, and reasonably close up. And maybe some of the creativity of his 'Up' picture.

I liked the way that the surface of this plant - Dioscorea elephantipes – looked, and when it came to post-processing felt that the relationship to a canyon made this a more interesting shot - with what look like rock layers and streams.

Interesting "canyons". At first glance, I thought it may have actually been an overhead of real canyons. I am impressed with the consideration you gave to crafting an entry to honor Alex.

A nice tribute to Alex's love of black and white and his apprreciation of pattern. I like your interpretation of this as a view of canyons from way up above..

nice intriguing shot. it looks familiar to something i've seen here in the states, but i doubt we have these south african plants here unless i've seen one in some botanical garden.

i see what you mean about the canyon look and layers.
take a look at my mugshot for some rock layering we experienced some years ago.

It certainly looks like a canyon. Neat tribute.

    A good composition.

Excellent eye to see the potential in the texture of this plant. B&W was the prefect choice. Well done.

It does somewhat resemble a canyon.

Like the texture. I do see the "canyons" but find it a bit of a stretch - still looks like bark to me. Cropping some from the right might improve composition and balance, IMO.

Striking abstract image. Your explanation and justification of this image was beautiful and thoughtful. Well done.
