Old Gaol       ©2016 babysister
Panasonic DMC-GX7       1st place, 246 points
1/8s, f4, ISO 1600, 14mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Changed to B&W. Crop. Increased exposure and contrast.       Extra Info: This original city gaol was built in 1841. Before that there were just “lockups” scattered around the developing city.
"The gaol’s system of punishment and reform was based on two foundations - silence and separation.
Prisoners started their time spending 23 hours each day locked in small cells, with one hour of solitary exercise.
No communication was allowed. When leaving their cells they were required to wear a silence mask.
Prisoners could bathe and change their clothes weekly and attend the chapel each Sunday.
They were provided with a bible to encourage better behaviour.”
The inmates were men, women and children. It closed in 1924.

Congratulations Babysister. You conveyed the atmosphere so well that you made me feel as if I was walking those depressing hallways.

Thanks Bernie. Yes I'm sure she will be pleased. All we need now is to get her back to her photographing once she is over those awful shingles.
Jomari: Thank you. Have you been there? I was quite spooked. They have the trapdoor and hanging equipment where Ned Kelly was hanged too. I don't know about the children but would expect that young ones would have been with their mothers and older ones alone doing time for crimes.

This is my top favourite in this challenge. It's a great shot - light, detail and composition, I love those leading lines.
The history included in your notes is fascinating. How times change. The children - were they in there with their mothers or were they bad children?

The lighting and monochrome treatment give this scene a very cold and foreboding feel. Kudos for the effective way you handled the bright light in the window.

Thank you for your absolutely chilling look at the history of this facility. I couldn't believe that children would be housed here. The use of B&W is just perfect to convey the desperation of the inmates, and the composition works beautifully. High in my pics.

Interesting piece of history. BW suits here. Maybe I would have cropped a bit off from the top. In my favorites.

Textbook leading lines, and the dark mood is perfect for the subject. Well done!

I like this bold stark image with only the glare from the end window causing some distraction. Good angle.

Wow, what a striking image, and your extra info really adds to the atmosphere. I like that single person standing in the light too.
