  #182 Contre Jour / Backlighting
Entry 11 of 22

potted succulent       ©2017 rd52
Canon EOS 7D       11th place, 76 points
1/500s, f7.1, ISO 800, ?, Shutter Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Using Rawtherapee converted to B&W with tweaking to a tiff. In Affinity Photo cropped and slightly rotated, used curves to increase contrast, healing brush to do away with some of the bright spots, used the blur brush on some of the background, reduced in size, slight clarity filter applied and saved as jpeg for the challenge.       Extra Info: A potted succulent on my deck in the afternoon sun.

I think the artifacts on the right are due to the "clarity filter" you used. I suspect it was some kind of aggressive unsharp mask that caused noise to be enhanced. If there's a cutoff parameter, this would be a good time to use it.

Great shot otherwise...

    Thanks for all the comments.
aoc 45 I don't know which horizontal fuzzy lines you're referring to? I don't see them on my monitor. Could it be the actual fuzz on the plant? It is accentuated by the back-lighting.
ysal if you are talking about the white line down the edge, they were on the right edge, really stood out because of the darkness and I cloned them out, didn't notice them on the left side till it was too late. I also used a smoothing brush to get rid of some of the white dots and can see where I missed some.
Again thanks for all the comments and votes!

The B&W treatment really works to bring out the texture of the cactus

Love the crispness and fine detail. Nicely composed and fitting for the theme.

I love the way the light has lit up the little hairs/bristles on the leaves, showing off their texture to full advantage. In my top few.

Well spotted. An excellent subject and well taken.

The backlit plants are wonderful. However, there are strange artifacts in the background along the right edge which I find very distracting.

I can't really put my finger on it but I really like this photograph. The fuzziness makes me laugh.

Nice lighting on the plant. Consider including something else - maybe a label for the plant - to enhance visual interest. (Why do there seem to be fuzzy horizontal lines across the image?)
