Panasonic DMC-GX7       3rd place, 152 points
1/125s, f6.3, ISO 125, 186mm, Manual, Pattern, flash

Post-Processing: levels adjusted; shadows deceased, highlights decreased, contrast increased; curves adjusted; filter – unsharp mask. Ash particles were cloned out of the smoke images. Smoke was colorized via Image – Adjustments – Hue and Saturation.       Extra Info: Incense generated the smoke and the incense stick was 3 ft from the black background. An external flash, synchronized with the flash on the camera, was positioned to the left of the incense stick at 9 o’clock. The camera’s flash was covered with electrical tape so as not to illuminate the black background; however, this did not interfere with triggering the external flash. A halogen lamp directly opposite the external flash at 3 o’clock, illuminated the incense stick and smoke during the entire process. The camera was ~2ft. in front of the incense stick. Images were taken at: (i) iso -125; (ii) f 6.3; (iii) 1/125-1/160 of a sec; and (iv) focal length of 80-100 mm. Shoe and smoke images were blended in Photoshop. See post processing for more details.

Thanks for the helpful critiques, comments and votes. A totally new venture photographically for me that was lots of fun. Now back to real life.

    Brilliant concept, and nicely executed.

Funny! The warning label should have read: "Discontinue use if green vapors emanate from shoes." I like the vapors on the right shoe. The left vapors seem to come from a single point rather from the whole opening in the shoe. Overall, a good job! In my favs.

I love the detail in the shoes, and the haphazard way you have positioned them. Great job photographing and merging the two shots.

interesting and technically (both setup and PP) well done. But, I would prefer just the simplicity of the two shoes with the black background; my imagination and memory does the rest.

Looks like the left shoe is rearing back from the smell, which strangely only emanates from the heel area of both shoes.

Well-shot, but rather than think about the smell, the green makes wonder if the shoes are about to catch fire from whatever is burning in there.

it may be a bit more intense and not as diffused as i'd like to see it used here but i do like the idea of the green smoke as it relates better to a foul odor.
in my favorites.

Nicely executed - although I suspect any aroma wouldn't shoot lazily out in the direction the shoe is pointing. Although - it the two were parallel, it wouldn't have the interest...

Interesting shot, and technically well done. What distracts me are the smoke columns rising at an angle, especially the column on the left. I realize a bit of air movement would cause that, but it looks unnatural to me. Still, in my TT
