Thank you all very much for your votes and comments. The controversy or debate about including the hand was one I went through while trying to frame the shot, and maybe that's why I think he caught me :). Without it it's a portrait, with it it's a street scene with a possible story and there is a relationship between the fingers of both people, and of course the fact that the second person is unknown adds a question to the story. If you want just the portrait then all this is irrelevant and interfering. Both sides of the debate have been well put in your different comments and opinions.
I did blur the background a bit as the problem with street shots is that sometimes there is too much in them :)
Thanks again for your support and maybe I'll manage to participate in the monthly challenges. It's easier for me to take part in those which do not have a time factor, as I am not as in control of my time as I would love to be.

Congratulations on your second place. Now looking at some of the comments and looking a little closer I notice that is appears that the background is either from a different scene or you applied a blur effect which is brushed in, however I dont see anything mentioned in the post processing section. Would be interesting to know.

Very happy that this did well for you, looks like I was not the only one to mention the foreground, still it garnered you some very good comments and votes.

Doto! I thought this one looked like your style, except for the cigaretted hand you included (which gave me some doubt as to it being yours). Congrats on your high finish in a tough field!!!

Try to enter more often! We miss you.

I love this photo! The man has so much character. And the black and white made it that much more beautiful.

Very good portrait. Composition, sharpness and contrasts good. My first choice.

There is a story here waiting to be told. The man's face is so expressive. Is he talking to the lady with the cigarette? What is he holding in his hand? This is an exceptional photograph, with wonderful detail, judicious blurring of the background, and great interest.

This can only be Tel Aviv. Another great character study by my favourite street photographer. Much as I like the main character I find the hand in the foreground distracting and the white soled sneakers. I sense that you prefer not to use a lot of post processing but I would have been tempted to crop or clone them both. The portrait itself keeps this in my tt.

Very interesting image of the man, but the white coat, arm and hand (of a woman?) draws attention away from him and makes me wonder what sort of "story" there is here.

Very nice except for the bright arm intruding into the frame -- it's brightness pulls the eye from subject and it is unrelated to the subject.

Great example of street photography. Very much in the style of Anthony Comyn, which is meant as a compliment. At first I thought the foreground was somewhat distracting, but the more I looked, it actually enhances the image. In my TT.

technically superb for contrast and exposure. probably my top pick.
that said, i'm curious about the abrupt change in focus at the edge of the brick pavement. are we on an elevated area above the background level?
personally, i need some backstory. if i knew this was part of a series of street shots with a theme, or that this man is known to the photographer, it would make for more universal appeal. his stare is so engaging it works better as a portrait. a tighter crop just above the other person's arm and just to the right of his chair helps for me.
number one.

wonderful capture of this man, but the cigarette in hand in foreground really turns this into a great shot. In addition to the visuals here, so many messages...

I really like this one, however The person in front smoking is rather distracting my eye keeps creeping over there, I would of cropped her out, still in my faves.

This a great character portrait/street shot. Nicely rendered in b&w. A real winner I think.

Love it. Your black point is very effective in this type of image. Very effective in black and white. My only critique would be the hand with the cigarette. I don't mind the cigarette or the hand, it is more just in this composition it doesn't really add much to the image, therefore distracts from the focal point. In my TT. Well done.

This is a beautiful and candid street portrait. The hand with a cigarette is a little distracting, but maybe that adds to the sense of the street. I can't quite tell if the man is pleased that you are taking his picture, or he's ready to come over and punch you! High in my Top Ten.

I like this photo my number one pick... lighting and focus are right on... I would have cropped out every thing from his knee down.
