We all know that rules are made to be broken. This just proves it. Congratulations on 3rd.

I think this rule can be broken any time ;)

Congratulations on third.

Thanks to everyone who commented and voted. I am so glad this challenge is OVER!!!

mrsawyer: I WAS struggling :) And then I looked up and the bird was flying overhead. I didn't crop it. He just decided to fly out of the frame for me! Another lucky shot!

Congrats Roland! I hardly mind the clipped wings and flying out of the frame. Beautiful shot. Did you crop it this way, or did you shoot it like this? Just wondering...

...and you said you were having a hard time, tsk, tsk. :-)

Poor birdie with his wings clipped - but all for a good reason!

The clipped wings should bother me, but they don't. I think it's because of the wonderful detail and the sense of movement that you have generated.

Nice back light. One can understand why it's better to move into a frame rather than out of it.

Some "broken tules" that work well together in the image to make it interesting and also add tension (shooting against the sun, subject moving out of the frame, chopped wings...).
I would have raised a little more of contrast and saturation, maybe, but the image is nice enough to be in my TT, well done :)

Anyway I like this photo very much. My first choice.

Brilliant image -- love it. It breaks the rules by not having space in front of the bird in the direction of flight. Usually the focus point for a living creature is the eyes, but here it's the beautifully backlit tail. The tail is placed according to the rule of thirds in the image.

Nicely shot. That the bird is flying out of the frame reinforces the idea of escaping, as your title suggests. Might soften the cloud in the lower right, which tends to pull the bird back.

Works for me! In my faves.

I'm not sure why I love this image so much! The feathers are beautiful and the overall color and lighting is fantastic. But I think the fact that the bird is cut off somehow really adds to the feeling of "escape" or "freedom". Nice, very high in my TT

Flying out of the frame I'm guessing this is the rule that you broke :-)

I like this anyway, great wingspan, and one of the few that actually broke a rule but where the photo still looks good.
