#229 Low Angle or Low Perspective Shot
Entry 5 of 18

Waffle House       ©2020 SteveBee
Panasonic DC-G9       5th place, 120 points
1/500s, f8, ISO 200, 28mm, Normal Program, Center Weighted Average, no flash

Post-Processing: Converted B&W. Adjusted B&W color mix by decreasing blue, and increasing orange, yellow, green, aqua, and red in various degrees. Applied a graduated filter to lower half to darken paved areas.       Extra Info: I used the low perspective along to emphasize the pavement marking to lead the eye into the image. I converted to black & white to simplify the composition and emphasize the arrow and the restaurant sign. The Waffle House chain is notable for good disaster preparedness and staying open during extreme weather or reopening quickly afterwards. FEMA coined the term 'Waffle House Index' as an informal measure of the severity of a disaster.

It was a good choice to convert to black and white. It definitely makes it all about the arrow and the Waffle House. (And the perspective.)

Thanks for the great explanation about the "Waffle House Index". I like the intensity of this shot - the low angle really focuses on that arrow, and it leads on to a thunderous sky. A bit of a tilt, but it really doesn't detract much.

There is no question where we are going. Strong image, even if the purpose is just breakfast.

Monochrome certainly works to bring the various components of the image together. Good choice.

Another fine example of a low angle with purpose. This really is quite good and I see you pushed the limits of how far you could angle the camera without a complete miss. I expect the arrow wasn't quite pointing in the direction you would want but this still works. I might have been tempted to "level" the arrow in PP, or even rotate it. My No. 2

Well composed and shot - like the dramatic contrast. The ominous sky looks like you'd want to get inside the Waffle House ASAP - but I assume it's closed now except for takeout, with no place to stand out of the rain!

Great idea, perfect for the theme. I think the B&W is most effective for this image. My only quarrel is that the tilt of the arrow is distracting. I know it is a function of the road but a bit of skewing might help. BTW- I used to frequent a Waffle House located between Anderson and Clemson, SC when a graduate student. It was my main source of food, particularly late at night.
