Gate Crasher       ©2020 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       20th place, 29 points
1/1000s, f4, ISO 100, 161mm, Manual, Spot, no flash
Post-Processing: Cropped, selective sharpening, and selective blur in the background.       Extra Info: Displaying perfect form, steely focus, and hard edges, this racer is already looking ahead to the next gate in this Women's 15 & under elite competition, where future Olympians come to the fore. (And yes, in slalom they turn their skis as tight to the gate as possible hence the protective gear to crash through each gate without injury. These skiers are clocked on radar at up to 85kph (52mph) so you don't really appreciate how fast they are moving until one goes off course or crashes.) This was shot in early 2020, at a time which seems a world away from where we are today. (Tips on what to improve (photo, not ski technique) welcomed. )

Thank you all for your comments and votes. Each one is appreciated.

A.N.Other As many noted, many suggestions on how to reframe and pulling detail in the snow depends I think on your monitor. The tracks are clear on mine and when I look at pro ski mag shots, completely blown highlights is quite the norm.

Mepo You have a keen eye. I thought others would pick up on the PP motion blur in the background. I was unsure which angle and which direction to apply the blur so I went with the opposite direction and right angles to how the camera would have been panning and it seemed to work for me.

    Nice shot and good timing.

I'd reframe it so there is more space at the bottom for the skier to ski into and less on the right hand side. Also increase the mediums a tad and reduce the highlights to get more definition in the snow.

Looks like perfect form to me. I'd like the photo as well. Is the blurred snow a result of pp? Either way I think it works well. The only thing that I would have tried it is to change the levels on the skier only just to brighten her up a bit. I've no idea whether this would work or not.

Thanks, Old Finn, it is one of my favourite ski shots.

Lo Thanks so much, Lo. If you ever want to try a run....

cookiejar Yes they all pretty much finish with legs that are spent; they generate a lot of G forces in those turns and the knees and thighs take the brunt of it.

There is so much confidence and focus there, and a wonderful feeling of being suspended in time. Great action shot with perfect timing.

Great action photograph. Oh, to have knees that could do that!

aoc46 I think I sharpened as far as I dare...the skier is still a little "soft" for an action shot...I think my focus was a tad off. I can add snow detail but you lose a lot of the impact as the skier stands out less. I can see if I can post a bit in outtakes.

ysal This is cropped. I can post a bit in outtakes to see if you like it better..

Good composition, great action - might suggest decreasing brightness and increasing clarity, each just a touch, to bring up tracks and other detail in the snow.

Good timing and skill to get good focus on a speeding subject. I feel like I want to see more of the course, but then the skier may get lost.

fc I thought about letter box but felt the subject would be too tight in the frame for the setting (plus I'd need a much sharper image!)

johncomyn The timing is why this one stood out for me as quite often the gate obscures part of the face in these shots. The reflection in the goggles was a bonus for me.

One of the joys of the mini challenge there is no theme so judging is on the “ What I like” or “What appeals to my sense of humour “
Every picture has a story some are disclosed and some not, this doesn’t matter as The Image has meaning to every entry

I belong to the "why " group of people who see skying as like parachuting from from a perfectly serviceable aircraft.I admire the skill and traing that goes in to it.
the image I would have cropped the right hand side by a third and some of the top blue and made image letter box style

Great focus and timing! Making me feel cold, April has been way to cool.
