babysister congrats on second; I thought judged as a photograph it should have been first. Technically it is well executed and the zigzag pattern really adds excitement.
I could write a book (and many have) about what art means today, but there is a difference between inspiration and copying. Like most, I think, I am greatly influenced by societal and cultural attitudes and that extends to the question of what makes a good photo.

I heard a lecture recently by the former head of the National Gallery of Canada (on the radio, not in person) who discussed the attitude toward art in western civilization and what we view as good art. One theme was that originality as a measure of how good a work of art is has come to critical predominance only in the past 200 years. Critics have come to view originality as a necessary barometer of what is good art and what is not. A Picasso is great art if it is original, but "cubism" didn't start with Picasso and those after Picasso are deemed mere imitators so much so that if you tell a studied art critic a sketch was by Picasso, they will rank it superior, but when the same sketch is presented as a work of an unknown artist circa a decade after Picasso came to prominence, it is ranked as a low quality image.

Congrats on 2nd place. I really like this concept and I think you have executed it well. I like the way the zigzags become distorted.
I must try this for my own enjoyment - I actually have that paper, too!

Congrats on your 2nd place finish. It is nice to know that your efforts were rewarded by the members as well as the feeling of accomplishment you felt from trying something new to you.

I think this is the best photo and will probably win so I ranked you my no. 6 pick because to me it is a well executed copy of others original ideas. I'm torn by that decision as it is maybe the best reflecting spoon shot image I can recall because of the zig zag pattern which looks original to me but there is nothing original in the set up or angle and I feel that way about most water droplet shots too. Certain ideas have been done so often there's a sense for me that I am looking at another copied shot.

aoc46: I have never tried this before but had seen a photo that a friend did. When I tried to do it I was confronted by 3 refections of ME in the background. I puzzled over until I worked out that tilting the card the spoons were on, up at the front, so that the angle was 45degs from the back I could then take the photo down the slope and get rid of my reflection. That was the "interesting experience". I really enjoyed working it out. is there another way of doing this from your experience?

Jade: It is strange but up to a few weeks ago I had never taken any note reflecting spoons. Then someone in the photo society which i am in, presented a photo like this with sheet music behind it. i was intrigued and wanted to try to do it, so copied the idea for this theme.
I have never seen them on Google and the paper was the only wrapping paper I had in the cupboard and I assumed that was my idea! I was disappointed by your comments because of that, but later reflected on them and thought isn't everyone influenced by seeing others photos and if it is not acceptable why do we get web sites suggested to us to look at for ideas? Just pondering.

I was expecting to see something like so not disappointed. the monochrome treatment works.

Hahaha, I did the same thing several challenges ago. It's a lot of fun and so many different opportunities.

This is well done but hardly an original idea. And there is my conundrum. Given certain skills anyone can copy anyone else's ideas and reflecting spoons are not original. But how do I know if you came up with this on your own without having any idea that others have done this same thing (with stripes no less) ad nauseum....

or just google "spoons reflection stripes" and you should find lots and lots.
