Contrasts @ The Shore       ©2008 wangi
Panasonic DMC-LX2       1st place, 363 points
1/125s, f3.2, ISO 100, 33mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Selectively merge two black and white conversions from the same raw file (one 'denser' / more contrast than the other)       Extra Info: The Shore, Leith -- a landscape built up from many different architectural styles, built over many years...

On the far left is the most recent addition - apartments on Tower Place. Architect was George Arnold for Morrison Homes; built 2001-2002. Immediately in front of them is an old small white lighthouse. The castle like building near the middle of the frame is now the Malmaison Hotel. It was designed by Charles Stuart Still Johnston and was opened in 1885 by the Earl of Roseberry as a Sailor's Home (for 65 officers and seamen, with 50 additional beds in attics to accommodate Naval Rescue men/shipwreck victims). Immediately to the right of that is the round tower which is the remains of a much altered tower windmill. It was built circa 1686 when Robert Mylne of Balfargie undertook to erect 'a wynd mill of the largeness of thretty-two feet diameter over the walls'. Next to that is a four story tenement built in 1802 as a counting house, now with 'The Shore' bar at ground level. The imposing white building is one of the few remaining reminders of Leith's industrial past - George Brown & Sons Engineers. In in front of all that we had a few barges lined up against the dock at the Water of Leith.

Thanks again everyone! I've just noticed that the same area has been the focus of a few Panachallenge entries in the past... http://www.panachallenge.com/search/index.php?search=leith&cat=entry And we're going back into the mist of time to the 0th mini challenge (!) and challenge #5! The panorama from the mini challenge 'completes the view' on the right where this one cuts off, but with some wonky stitching!

Congratulations!! Absolutely stunning and a well deserved 1st place! I had a look at the colour version, which is also excellent, but I feel you made the right choice for your entry.

Thanks for all the comments guys - very happy with the result!

This photo was taken on the final evening of the entry period, had the light not been 'just right' then I'd have been trying to enter a photo of a stone circle as architecture!

I've linked to the colour version of this shot on this photo on Flickr: http://flickr.com/photos/lkindness/2378999481/

The description of the different styles architecture on view was interesting & the water reflections help make it a very pleasant image of urban scenery, well done & in my TT.

That`s a beautiful pic. Nice feeling. BW suits well here, so many details that colours maybe would have made the pic some confused. High in my TT.
Good luck!

Really well taken, composed and developed, for me what makes this stand out is the crisp reflections in the water combined with the moody sky. Certainly in my TT!

In my short experience here in Panachallenge, I tend to prefer great color patterns to B&W, maybe it's because I haven't still worked a lot with B&W. This time, I surprised myself selecting in my favourites lots of B&W... and yours is one of the best!! not only architecture approach (thanks for all that amazing extra info!!) but also for a superb pic, that merge of raw conversions resulted excellent, the cloudy sky is impressive, and that reflections... waaah!
Still lover colour... but your pic will be in my top three, best of lucks!!

Have yet to vite but in my current top spot. Love the rich contrasty tones, the angled composition and the fantastic reflections set off by a wonderful sky. What's not to like here.
