Rubik's rule of thirds       ©2009 dodrizzt
Panasonic DMC-FZ50       14th place, 74 points
1/30s, f3.2, ISO 100, 48mm, Normal Program, Pattern, flash

Post-Processing: Little perspective correction, a touch of levels to burn out completely white background, selective colour saturation adjustment, cloned out two distracting stains, resize, a touch of USM       Extra Info: When looking for objects to make a composition, I found and old Rubik's Cube, whose lines clearly remembered me the guidelines for rule of thirds in a three-dimension aspect :-)
Set up over a white sheet of paper, tried lighting from a side window but finally decided for flash lighting, as it added some little interesting spot reflections just in the middle of the 'guidelines' in the Cube, as if they were the 'hot points' in the guidelines. And yes, I tried to situate the Cube following rule of thirds :-)

It is instantly attraciting photo, unlike mine which might be ignored on the cursory glance.

The striking colors, shape all good. But I believe the 1/3 rule should provide suggestion to the viewer to think about the photo, rather than shouting 'look at the middle, and this is all'. But here this photo, despite instantly attracitve and falls well in 1/3 rule, misses out on the suggestion part IMHO.

I agree the spot reflections add some life but it is still a pretty sterile image. Looks like a product photo for a mail order catalogue; or an Andy Worhol image.
