Metro Grocery Store, Parkway Mall, Toronto       ©2009 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       4th place, 70 points
1/30s, f2.8, ISO 80, 35mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Stitched in Panaroma Maker 3 software, set at 14mm to give the ultra wide angle view and exaggerate the curve of the roof-line. Shot hand-held no tripod. No other PP.       Extra Info: Constructed when the Space Age and cars with tail fins excited the suburban household, this iconic grocery store in Don Mills featuring a glass curtain facade and a curved roof-line brought the promise of a futuristic world of jet travel and the long sweeping curves of orbital journeys -- to the housewife doing her weekly grocery shopping.

Thanks, akebono. This was a fun image to do.

And thanks to all who voted; I'm so pleased this image worked for many of you since I was really unsure about distorting such an iconic structure.

Thanks, dodrizzt. I agree about the clouds and if you can now read my earlier comments, I actually tried to upload a "better" image with more defined clouds in PP which do "pop" a little more. Unfortunately my ISP went down before deadline. The ultra wide as you can see is a 14mm effect in PP.

I like that ultra wide angle effect here, adds a lot to the curve of the building. Pity the clouds are not so "pop" to add more drama, but there's nothing you coluld do with that...
Makes my TT, good luck!

Thanks Una. All credit to the original designers who 50 years on still have something that looks futuristic.

Very futuristic. Interesting picture as well as interesting mall. In my TT.

wrosenthal I give most of the credit to the architects of the day. It is truly a classic piece of post-war suburban design, comfortably reflecting the optimism and sense of adventure of the time.

LaRee Twilight is a great moment to capture the lighting of commercial buildings. To my eye, this store looks great at all hours. It makes a statement but is so understated and so out of the ordinary at the same time. I wonder over the years, how many shoppers have noticed or even thought about how out of the ordinary it really is. Maybe every one, and maybe few; the fact that it is so elegant and yet so unpretentious and unassuming, you just can't assume either way.

rafinmelb The day after submitting this I had second thoughts and an uneasy feeling the distortion was disrespectful to the original design. I actually tried to replace this shot with one without the distortion but my ISP went down before deadline so I couldn't change it. (Though I did finally get that glass curtain shot I never got to take for the -ain challenge!)

I like the almost design quality of this shot. Nice compositional structure as well. In my TT.

I love what you've done with this image. The structure is very eye catching. You took this the perfect time of day to really show off this store. Good work!

Love the distortion on this as it adds to the overall. Good contrast between sky and warm interior. Enough human presence to make it interesting. Well done. What a funky building also.
