OK - you had me completely fooled. I thought you had popped the bottom of the toaster and actually taken it from underneath- you really are a master at merging photographs!

Thanks, elliott. I found the overexposure was required to bring out the metal elements in the toaster but your point is well taken. I did not know how to otherwise bring the industrial look to this image.

Thank-you, Lo. The two shots were quick but as you so perceptively noted, it took a bit more work to get the eyes positioned properly.

Interesting angle - It must ahve taken a few shots to get the eyes positioned just right in the slots - well done

Hi Franz, I believe that Pattern is the focus (as opposed to "Spot" etc.), sort of like a shot gun, I guess. There are two layers, the toaster and the girl. I suppose I could have shot them together but this was easier. The "grain" effect is a combination of the natural by-product of overlaying one image with a desaturated duplicate of the same image and the natural graininess of the metal in a toaster full of crumbs! An added benefit was that the untoasted bread in the toaster comes out looking toasted. You will notice the girl is not grainy but merely in softer focus to better play off the harshness of the metal. The girl's skin features are actually properly exposed in the original image but her very smooth flawless complexion and the overlay created the blown skin feature which also adds impact to the image. Getting the eyes, nose and mouth properly but naturally placed was very difficult working with two images and might have been impossible if photographing both together at the same time; yet the two images worked with one take on each - set up to photograph less than 2 minutes for both images combined - and that includes putting the bread back in the drawer! The actual sequence I think was layer, flatten, duplicate, desaturate, adjust, resize.

Judging from the lack of comments, I don't think many see the same beauty in the shot that seems so obvious to you and I though. I think this shot is technically superior to my Main entry though it is getting far less commentary.

WOW! Cool idea! It looks amazing.
It is a montage, is it? Your PP info "layer" suggests that. But it still works wonderfully to me. "Pattern" is that special grain - it works great!
Perfectly on theme and nevertheless extraordinary. Very well done!

Thanks, Rino. Only later did I think I should have tried the shot with the elements lit but I think I may have lost the cold hard industrial look. This is actually a shot of a toaster laid on its side with the bottom tray opened.
