Brett - Thanks - Yes it's full (insane)steam ahead - 115 Volts. I was a bit worried about what would happen at first but it is a very sedate process.
Alberto mon ami. Don't sweat it - I understood your comment perfectly, have had the same reaction to other photos myself:-) and congratulations on your terrific shot - I knew it would be #1 and voted it there myself. |

Yes dear friend,I saw your comment! :-)))
For this caption:....Unfortunately my bad english doesn't allow me to explain exactly what are my thoughts...Your pic isn't unpleasant! I see You composed the scene and tried to render this great idea! ...It's the subject that is too strange!Perhaps the contrast is too scanty...I really don't know!...But It's only my taste! :-)) |

Just wanted to clarify that it was also my no 1 once I realised it was a science fact - even more so! Thanks Mepo. |

This was my no 1 when I thought the light was in PP. Now that I realise its for real I am again amazed how reality is stranger than sci fi. Have you got the mains running thru these things or is it a more sane voltage? |

Edward - Thanks for the comment - it's when the pickles start to scream that it really gets into the good doctor's realm :-) |

Alberto - I'm devastated :-( but thanks for the 4 and your honesty. Perhaps you perceive the pain of the pickles? I will have to zap them with your plasma and launch them into hyperspace down your tunnel LOL I stated out to make a chandelier of pickles but it went downhill from there:-) p.s. I hope you saw my late comment in Golden Hour:-) Edited on Mar 29, 2010

Franz - Glad you liked it. I've listed the method in a previous reply in case you want to try it with your kids. It's a lot of fun. Pushing the nails in lengthwise gave the most light -( I also tried pushing them in across the width of the pickle). I used 5cm nails but would try longer ones next time. As Jade noted the only real change of state was the steam that the process provided. My apologies to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Pickles - they did not suffer in vain LOL Edited on Mar 28, 2010

eliot - This was my son's idea, he had heard of this being done so we went to work experimenting. I used a power bar with its own ground fault protector and used a full face mask at the start as we had no idea what would happen.
We inserted nails into the pickles and soldered wire to the ends. We fired them in series and in parallel but the series did not light up the second or third pickle. A dinner plate was our non-conductive surface and it was soon covered in pickle juice.
When you turn the power on it takes a while for the pickles to heat up and then they shoot steam out of one end (this caused the nail to move in the lower pickle as you can see). Then they light up and it is most satisfying.
The main illumination is from the pickle lights but I did leave the overhead room light on to provide some detail in the shadows. Camera on a tripod (of course) and focus fixed. I can't remember if I used aperture priority or complete manual exposure.
Lots of fun - very entertaining - highly recommended. |

Jade: Come on - change of state from pickle juice to light too :-) From the 'Don't try this at home series' (like all things interesting). Glad you liked it - I intend to try it again with longer nails in an attempt to light up more of the pickle. Appreciate your comment. Edited on Mar 26, 2010

I like this one so much, I'm qualifying it because you've got some change of state (liquid to gas) happening at the end of the pickle! My No. 2 Edited on Mar 26, 2010
