First attempt at a macro but even with tripod found it difficult to get a really sharp image. Looking forward to comments and criticism

Amberbug, thanks for your comments and the link, I will certainly have a look.
mrsawyer, again thanks for your comments and tips. I didn't try any of your suggestions and preventing shake even with the tripod was an issue that I noticed. I will take up your ideas and practice on some other subjects. That's what I like about entering a challenge, the opportunity to learn from others and improve ones own technique.

It might not be the prettiest photo but it gets my vote for ingenuity.

I think you did a good job for the first attempt. The white bristles in the left are a little out of focus or need more detail that might be could be adjusted in pp.
Below is a video that might help you in future shots. I found it interesting, and learned a few more things myself.

I agree that it is not as sharp as it could be.
1) Did you try using the timer to delay taking the photo so your hand would not shake the tripod during exposure?
2) Did you use manual focus?
3) Did you turn off image stabilization?
At first I thought I was seeing stirrers for drinks. Good to find an ordinary object to view in an extraordinary way!

a very colourful clear result
the focus on the brush tops worked well great colours .
i assume a new brush...

Clever choice of subject, and well-shot. The cork background is problematic, especially as the green bristles are about the same value and they tend to mush together. A white porcelain sink might work better.

Mepo, thanks for your comments and suggestions, I actually did use a tripod, but I take your point about using a smaller aperture and improved lighting. I was trying use the available ambient light rather than fill in with flash.

I think you did very well without a tripod. I guess I don't need to say that it's a bit soft. Several things could help - a tripod (as you mentioned) with a cable release or shutter delay; a smaller f stop, say f5.6 would give greater dof and probably improve the resolution; stronger lighting will allow a faster shutter speed and maybe improve the definition. De-noise and/or USM might help in the pp.
Despite all that I like your composition and choice of format, the colours are great as well as the various textures, and the background is a perfect choice to support all of those. Well done!

An interesting choice on the theme. The crop is a bit tight. The background is a bit distracting, with the texture and brownish colour it carries a lot of weight. As for the brush, the detail is excellent but the photo doesn't reveal much to me other than it being a toothbrush. Maybe if it was an old frayed brush I would have found it a bit more interesting. I guess what i am saying is well done for nailing details you were able to achieve, but in this case the subject lacks impact.

With F2.8 your not going to get much depth with macro, you do have sharp focus up close. Not liking the subject though, maybe taken from the top trying to abstract the tooth brush would work.
