Wonders of Nature - Bismuth       ©2015 Mepo
Panasonic DMC-FZ200       6th place, 114 points
1/2s, f6.3, ISO 800, 131mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: From RAW. Minor levels adjustment and USM. Used healing brush to remove some dust from the surface of the mirror.       Extra Info: Bismuth is a metal that has been used since ancient times. It does occur naturally but is usually the result of lead refining. The amazing display of colours is due to refraction and oxidation. This sample is about 15mm (5/8") wide.

Unlike so many of the top ten, I think this is truly a "macro" shot. Congrats on a fine image which should have ranked ahead of many other non-macro entries IMHO.

Pretty object (I have one of those at home too). Interestingly, I find the reflection prettier than the object...

Nice attempt on a tough subject to photograph. Do you collect minerals, I do.

Nicely composed. I like the off-centre treatment, as it seems to draw me into the crystal. The mirror and black background form a perfect backdrop to showcase the gem.

Thanks for all the comments - appreciated as always.
I did take several closer shots, but that meant losing the reflection which I liked - it helps balance the main object. I also tried a square shot to reduce the amount of black but it looks like a pimple on a mountain. In the end, I composed using the rule of thirds and this worked best, it allows the face of the metal to be looking into the frame.

Nice setup, well lit and exposed. Maybe a little too much deep black.

Very striking and colorful crystal - looks like some sort of Aztec god. Like the way it stands out against the dark background.
