Post-Processing:
Adjusted exposure of the egret, enhanced saturation, denoised, sharpened, cropped, cloned out a small man-made object (light fixture, I think), resized.
Extra Info:
Tough challenge!! The Japanese pine trees seem to form layers of horizontal clumps of leaves, except for one area which is predominantly dark. But the bright white egret filled that dark void which, to me, seemed to balance the overall image.
Very difficult to decide, but I think this displays light/dark balance.

The photo is excellent, but I have not found the balance, therefor missed my top ten. Well, now we are even :-)

Balanced and well taken.

I agree with your comment that the egret balances the composition. You have exposed this nicely and captured details of form in the egret. I love those white birds but when I photograph them I always end up with them blown out. High in my favourites.

I like it very much. I feel the white egret makes a good symmetrical balance with the green tree.

Really like your composition, and the contrast in the trees.

The placement of the bird gives it a nice asymmetrical balance also.

The 2 trees in isolation would have been unbalanced with the large one on the left, but the added white bird balances this well. Congratulations.

The bird is well positioned against the dark background creating an almost 3-D effect. IMO, the red flowers(bottom right) are a bit distracting

light fixtures just get everywhere. this picture has that wow factor as well as the balance.

Get rid of that one little area of sky. It carries a lot of visual weight because it is bright and more because it's on the edge of the frame. I would clone some leaves in there or just crop it out.

almost submitted similar idea. i stalked a snowy egret on the water edge to get him in a spot with a dark background. when i started to walk away, he followed me and gave me a couple great closeups (but nothing for the challenge).
nice job on this. really doesn't need the extra info to explain it. high in my favorites right away.

Amazing shot! The amount of detail, composition, and this scene in particular is superb.

Well done and beautifully captured. Great example of light/ dark balance.
