  #166 Balance: A Composition Tool

Winding Path       ©2015 ysal
Panasonic DMC-GX7       22nd place, 17 points
1/500s, f3.5, ISO 320, 40mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Adjusted exposure, cropped, applied minor vignette, denoised, sharpened, resized.       Extra Info: Hard to say which balance type this is, but I believe it is "Eye Direction".
The wooden rail, shadow and the concrete path formed a DNA-like pattern diagonally cutting the image. Both sides of the diagonal are balanced with similar bamboo trees forming the vertical pattern.

I love the warm tones of the wood against the bamboo. I feel that the shot would be more balanced if it had been taken from an angle that placed the curved fence more to the left.

A beautiful and complex photo. My no. 11 simply because it looks a tad unbalanced to me.

Good balance, and I like the curve of the fence shadow. The compressed view of the fence itself seems a bit congested.

If you view this image in thumbnail view you will clearly notice the imbalance. The bright light on the right is very dominant and unbalances the image. In full view I can where you were going with the remaining part of the image for balance but there is just too little contrast on the left for this to beat the bright highlight. I do however like this image and think the subject and execution in done well, I just don't feel it is balanced.

I feel like I am on the wrong side of the fence when I view this which does not feel natural. The curve of the rail and the path do contrast with the vertical bamboo. The very bright area in the center however is too strong I think.
