  #166 Balance: A Composition Tool
Entry 11 of 27

Angela       ©2015 Mepo
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       11th place, 82 points
1/59s, f4.5, ISO 80, ?, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Crop. Increase blur in background. Clone minor faults. Sharpen bark, soft focus remainder. Convert to B&W, apply Soft Peach filter (includes vignette).       Extra Info: I asked Angela to lean against a tree so I could create a shot that balanced her smooth face with the rough bark. I used the peach filter to dilute the colour and emphasize the balance of textures.

Thanks ysal - I think the vignette made that worse.

I think this is a beautiful portrait. The light area to the upper right was a bit distracting to me.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I realise I should have ditched the filter and stuck with the original :-)

I thought that this would have placed higher. It is a marvelous portrait, infectious smile.

Not TT but so close! I like the poignancy of the vignette and the nostalgia but I'll bet it works just as well without it.

Thought this would be in the top 10 for sure!

Looks balanced to me and has a lovely homey feel to it. Took a few seconds to grasp what the fuzzy thing was next to the tree. Thought it was part of an animal at first. (If it isn't synthetic, I suppose I was right!) In my favs.

Thanks for the comments everyone; always appreciated. A special thanks to Angela who has a fantastic natural smile that reflects her great personality and brightens up everyone's day.
Robert - much appreciated. She is so easy to photograph.
fc: glad you liked it.
Jade - I'm happy you noticed that. One of the reasons I liked the vignette was that it seemed to bring the shot together.
el: Thanks. I figured you might like it, but I was missing a Saturn rocket :-)
Old Finn - Thank you. The peach filter reminded me a lot of your Northern light.
Anthony: Thanks. Glad you think that.
aoc - Thanks - I will try out your suggestion.
Lo: Merci
johncomyn - Glad you liked the portrait - appreciate your comment.
jonari: Yes she does, it's infectious. Thank you.
babysister - Kudos for noticing that - to be honest I'm not sure how the filter achieved that, but I liked the result.

I love the creams and touch of colour on the scarf and well balanced.

Really nice portrait, not liking the edge effect though.

This is a beautiful way to take a portrait, with the roughness of the bark against the softness of her face. I'm not sure the vignette adds to the image. The blurred background definitely does.

Very nice portrait, good balance. Consider a bit tighter crop, especially removing some of the white above and right.

An interesting image in a number of ways. I see it as balanced and also a divided image with two distinct halves which fit seamlessly.

One of the most creative uses of balance in this challenge. Beautifully exposed and processed. Great job
