  #166 Balance: A Composition Tool

Canon EOS REBEL T3i       24th place, 15 points
1/100s, f10, ISO 100, 770mm, Aperture Priority, Center Weighted Average, flash

Post-Processing: Crop to center flower in frame of green. Adjusted color balance and definition (on the flower). Cloned out some debris on the flower stalk.       Extra Info: I tried to achieve a color balance between the flower and background. The setting sun let me highlight the contrast between the green background and the purple/blue of the flower. The shot also shows balance between the detail in the flower and the oof background. I did try cropping so that the flower was to one side, balancing with open space, but it did not work. This is one of those flowers that needs to be in the center, spreading it's blooms in both directions.

    Thanks for the comments.
Jade: And I thought I could slip a sunset shot past you :-) Remind me not to bring you a bouquet of flowers when we meet.

Technically good but quite common in that this looks like a zillion other very good flower shots. A nice documentary botanical style all the same.

The flower shows a nice radial balance, with one central straight-on bloom and the others extending out from it. Would be better seen against the darker part of the background, as the sunlit area competes too much with the flower - would make for a better color balance, too, IMO.

    Really like the contrasting colours.

I believe this is a balanced image.

fc: Good spotting! The EXIF on the site got the lens wrong. It was my 28 - 105 zoom and I was using it at the maximum of 105mm. Tripod and cable release of course. At full zoom the dof is very narrow. I filled in the shadows with my on camera flash, but I used a portable diffuser that snaps into the hot shoe - highly recommended. If there is enough interest I will post a link to it in the outtakes. The temperature was below zero, but this was in a hothouse. I figured with a blooming flower at this time of year and by using 'color' I'd remain anonymous :-)
