Landscape - Boulders Beach Penguin Colony       ©2015 Jade O.
Lge Nexus 5       5th place, 140 points
1/2364s, f2.4, ISO 102, ?, ?, ?, no flash

Post-Processing: sooc, resized       Extra Info: Symetical Balance. The sky above and sand below were balanced with the water between. The dark upper right and dark lower left balance the opposing corners and direct attention to the center of the image, as does the curving shore balanced against the lands on the horizon, dead center. The heavier weighted rocks on the left and darker corner are balanced against the lighter rocks on the right by the greater land mass on the right.

Location: Western Cape, South Africa

It must have been a wonderful experience to see these all these penguins in one place. What a magnificent country.

Maybe we could make our next trips co-inside. Show you some of the north.

Jade nicely done! How did you enjoy your second trip, it was your second right? Been since 2008, I've had the opportunity to go back. With a family and all not a cheap trip. Must say I do enjoy the stress free life living in Canada, I do miss Africa though.

Clearly I'm easily confused! South Africa is such a beautiful country with so much opportunity if only it will be governed rightly (and yes I'm not a Zuma fan nor the recent shanningans with the firing of the finance minister).

Looks like you enjoyed the trip! I see you already confusing John and myself.., us South African must all look alike. To recap.. I would be AC not JC... :) Congrats on you 5th place!

Thanks Bernie. That pano feature sure beats stitching! Next time I'm setting the auto timer and strapping it to a penguin,--- on a long leash, lol!

Neat I replied on your entry. I did lose count of the penguins, haha!

That is a lot of penguins. Great scenery.

I did vote in the end, this probably should of ended up in my picks but somehow overlooked it.

Btw we loved our trip to Canada!

5th place with a handheld cell phone shot??? I'll take it! : )
(So many fine entries that ranked below mine, so I'll credit the ranking with the scene and not so much the photog.)

Thanks everyone for your votes and especially your comments. Each one is appreciated.

Old Finn Thanks, though still lots of flaws as others have noted.

Mepo That massive dent is the tsunami that hit just seconds after this shot was taken....penguins everywhere! O.k. that is what happens when you are scanning the horizon with the handheld phone doing a pano shot and you get a little unsteady...no stitching involved; this is one shot.

dk It was warm and I had no idea these guys liked to vacation in the sun! I actually thought this was a pretty good time to shoot since the sun was off my right shoulder; can't imagine being there earlier in the day....because of the pano you can see the shadow angle changing from left to right

Elyod The dip is caused by my unsteady hand as I shot the pano handheld; it's one shot taken with a sweeping motion.

Beautiful picture with good balance in several ways. In my TT

I do like this but there are a couple of points that I find distracting. First is the massive dent in the ocean on the left side which is accentuated by the sloping rocks and the shoreline underneath which all seem to follow the distortion. No doubt part of the stitching process. I also wish the horizon did not dissect the picture - I 'd like to see less sky and more of the beach since it holds more interest. Beautiful colours and scenery with lots of interest. In my tt.

wow, fun shot! Looks warm there; those little guys overheating?! I think you'd be better shooting this either without the distracting shadows to left or at a time of day when the a different pattern of shadow could add interest to the picture.

The photo has good balance, good colour and lots of interest, but why the undulation of the horizon on the left side?

aoc I had limited options but I agree a few of the penguins are clipped but they go right up the beach and it was inevitable.

RL Getting there is easy. South Africa is really quite safe and an inexpensive destination once you get there.

Very nice! Love the blues and the contrast of the sea and rocks, not to mention all the penguins. You might get complaints about needing more of a main focal point, but to me this shot is about the whole scene. If anything, I might prefer a little less sky and more sand.

Wish I were there. Beautiful image. I love the symmetry.

JC I agree. The wobbly horizon is an easy fix and the dark mass to the right is a little heavy but no time to play so I entered sooc.

ysal fc Thanks. I was tempted to eliminate the signs of human habitation but felt it was more appropriate to leave them in.And no cars just houses here...the image suffers greatly in small sized format.

Certainly beautiful, being a South African this close to my heart. I am however bothered by 2 things. The wobbly horizon and the sharp incline of the mountain to the right of the image. The incline is balanced by the dark area in the bottom left to a degree but not enough.

Would be better without the cars and the hill to the right, but I still like this a lot.

SOOC is straight out of the camera. Handheld sweep pano - yes, Steve, that is the way it works. You can go 360 degrees if you like. It is like painting with a brush. I agree with the cramped bottom though and thought of cloning out the bisected penguins which would have helped the shot a lot, I think.

You say SOOC -- do you mean an in-camera panorama? Otherwise you must have cropped. It's a pretty scene and wonderful photo op. I don't know what your vantage point options were, but it would have been nice to see the penguins closer up. The bottom of the frame feels very cramped so for me that is not good balance.
