Thanks for all the nice comments (and votes).

As for the backstory: We're hosting an exchange student, and took her to Sovereign Hill, a re-creation of a 19th Century goldrush town. I figured all those old-style buildings and people in period costume would be fertile hunting ground for a B&W theme, so I was prowling the streets looking for targets when I looked in the window of an Ironmongers store (Hardware store in 21st century speak) and knew straight away I'd found my entry. B&W is all about light and shade and shape, and those spirals were just irresistible.

@mepo - well spotted! Those drill bits are probably over 100 years old.

Great eye. My #1. These bits are in pretty poor shape - whoever buys them is going to have a lot of sharpening to do.

I fell my eye drawn upwards and it just wants to keep on going! Amazing shot. Love everything about it. I envy your ability to see things like this. I presume this is from Thomas but if not please take that as a huge compliment.

Nice spotting. The corkscrew shape offers a unique way to showcase the variances in greyscale. Great detail

Nice lighting and exposure. Looking at the thumbnail I thought they were birthday cake candles :-). GL.

I love the simplicity. So well done - congratulations on having such a great eye. Lighting is superb and fits the theme perfectly.

Clever concept - the drill bits seem to evoke minarets. Nice!

Love the contrast and this is an effective Black and White. The skewness of the image bothers me most. In my favourites.

window light is the best! Wonder if in boosting your contrast you blew some highlights?
