Hard Carving       ©2016 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       7th place, 81 points
1/800s, f8, ISO 80, 203mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Cropped, some minor cloning, adjusted contrast, brightness.       Extra Info: A racer rounds gate 4.

(Sometime you are just happy with the result, I like just about everything about this one, the lighting, exposure, composition, and the limited four colour pallette -- blue -goggles, snow dye, mouthguard, boots, the red racing gates, lips and snowsuit, and the black and white tones, with each colour forming a pleasing triangular colour composition - to my eye at least.)

Haha! Thanks Leanne! As soon as I have a chance I will post the original and you'll see why adding the board was a bit too much for me! (And to be honest, I think this works o.k. with the clipped end, but just my opinion of course. I really don't have a full board image to compare it with.)

got my 2nd place vote. Would have been #1 if you had all of the board in the frame. :)

Thanks for all your votes and comments.
Each one is appreciated.

And thanks for the long note! I will try posting some options in outtakes.

Still a lovely photo Jade-O. My interpretation of Mepo's tighter crop goes towards the same purpose for my comment on the crop too tight. Basically to get the subject a little more into frame and to get it closer to the third lines. So cropping in further would actually have the a similar effect but would maybe then also highlight and bring more focus to the awesome expression and concentration. The reason I went for a wider crop and not a tighter one (other than to balance) was because it appears there is some good action kick-up of snow falling out of the frame which naturally I would like to see more of. So maybe to be more specific ... the crop is fine, I just wish the snowboarder was more in the frame and I could see more of the reaction in the snow from that hard cornering. From a balance perspective, although I think the flag is relevant to a degree it doesn't carry nearly as much weight as the snowboarder, basically the snowboarder and flag have equal visual weight but emotionally I am more interested in the snowboarder. All that said, photographing this speed is tough getting the perfect composition is always going to be a hit and miss scenario and even though IMO it could be better, I still think it is a great photo. It is purely some critique I hope you appreciate which I sincerely hope just gives you a better idea of my voting choice.

Love the bold colours and the action. The tight crop on the right makes me wish you had taken it just a millisecond later, but it's a great capture.

Well the tally is, one for tighter crop, three for wider, and one for keeping it as is.

I appreciate all the comments but my view is wider will risk losing the figure in the landscape and I have exactly what I want here including the tight edge on the right. This is one of those few images I am simply perfectly happy with.

Nice capture, with good action and color. Crop seems a little tight on the top and right.

The concentration here is quite evident and captured very well. Pity about the tight crop, especially on the right and top. Need for space. But other than that it is a beautiful photo.. in my favourites.

A wider angle would of enhanced the scene better, she's crammed into the frame with nowhere to go.

Good action shot. Love the snow curling up under the board. I think a tighter crop and cloning out the flag behind the snowboarder would give better balance. Great detail and colour. Red and black make such a good combo.
