Extra Info:
It stood strong for years, giving testament to the generations that passed by. Witness to the trials, the tribulations, the celebrations. Watching as the fields disappeared to be replaced by houses left and right. Giving shade and protection from the elements until one day a very small beetle came all the way from the orient to kill the tree dead. Now if is gone, only the 110 circular rings giving evidence of its existence. It is sadly missed.
The lump of wood on the left was cut from the trunk. It had a steel hook inside that was completely grown over. Fortunately, it was discovered before a cut was made so was not hit by the chainsaw blade.

Thanks for the comments. Too cluttered I think is right. I was trying to disguise the stump a bit since it was actually cut down two years ago. I hope they find something that will control the Emerald Ash Borer before they are all gone. We lost four of these beautiful trees from our yard.
dk; That is sad to hear.
Bob Dyon, Big Yellow Taxi:
They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum.
And they charged all the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em.
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got till it's gone?

Those cursed beetles are killing entire forests. Between deforestation and pests, I wonder if there will be any trees left in a few hundred years.

This may be an example where less could have been more. The story told about the age of the tree and the rings works, but then the rings are almost completely covered my the weapons that took it down. In my TT, but I think it could have been stronger.

Suits to the topic. Well composed. Interesting picture. In my favorites.

great title and subject, invoking feelings of loss and a sense of history.
did you try this with a different composition? I would have liked to see more of the trunk; maybe fewer tools and remove the extra chunk of wood - it feels a bit busy. Getting rid of the helmet may have been useful as it stands out owing to colour / brightness
Blurring the background a bit more may have helped.
the embedded hook could have been a photo on its own - the absorbing of external objects, especially nature vs manmade - could be an interesting metaphor.

Aesthetically, this is a bit too cluttered for my liking. However, it does stir my emotions. From your point of view it is the demise of the tree which triggers an emotional response. From my point of view it is the equipment. It represents a transition from one life phase to another. My husband can no longer cut his own wood as he used to enjoy doing due to a shoulder injury, so goodbye wood heater, hello gas.

the bigger they are the smallest can win
David and Goliath spring to mind.

don't take this the wrong way, i think the placement of the elements are too 'arranged' for the overall composition. could be a good advert for the tools but lacks the spontaneity of what i would expect this scene to show. other wise, great entry for the challenge with included extra info.
