Post-Processing:
Combine two images. One for the windows and one for the interior. Automatic sharpening and enhancement.
Extra Info:
I tried perspective correction but it seems to distort the reality of the soaring arches.

More great comment. Thank you all.
Note to Bernie: If you want to 'make' Lo choose a theme (or anything else for that matter) please be my guest. I would advise that you get your medical insurance up to date before your attempt. :-)))

Hey, I just noticed the results are in! Congrats! (no wonder you made Lo choose this theme... LOL)

congrats Mepo, on being first and such a cathedral. You do it justice

Very impressive--both the photo and your 1st and 2nd place wins! Nice going.

Many congrats on a fine win Mepo. Yes 'the old one, two step' was very enjoyable on both sides :-). This photo was my No.1
So they are painted! I thought I'd never seen marble like that before :-) .

Many thanks everyone. Your votes were appreciated and your comments even more so.

Congrats Michael, beautiful location beautifully photographed. It has an almost artificial look, as some pointed out, but I think it adds to this image of a very magical place. Something straight out of a Disney movie.

Congrats Mepo on two great captures. Both were my #1' s. You are clearly the overarching king of arches.

I think you made the right choice in leaving the perspective as is. The lighting and color are awesome!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the great comments. For those who felt it was a bit too much, I tend to agree. I've never seen a cathedral with painted columns before and I think that takes the decor a bit over the top.
Neil: This is the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica in Ottawa. It is a 19th-century church. Check the entry in Wikipedia, especially the shot of the altar area which is even more over-the-top. Also, you are right about the exposure for the windows. I took this on the last day of the challenge and processed it in a hurry.

What an Amazing looking building! I'd love to photograph it :-) .Where is it? What is it called? You did excellently to get this result from only two exposures. I'm really impressed with the amount of detail you managed to capture (almost too much at the pointy end!). It's almost perfectly centered too. My only real issue with it is the 6 windows. maybe the exposure you used to take them was a bit too short as they seem too dark as to look unnatural. Maybe it was getting dark outside and the exposure needed to be pushed somewhat? The transition between the windows and building seems to be a little abrupt in places. Maybe a touch of 'bluring' between the two would help? GL.

Spectacular and technically brilliant photo. It ends up looking a bit too complex and 'faked' for my taste.

I don't mind your converging arches. After all that is how we see it. Certainly not lacking in arches. Well taken.

dave: I agree it is a bit busy. I've never been here before and all the ornamentation blew me away. I did try moving further up the nave but then, there was even more decoration in the area of the altar and it lost the sense of size that the columns help transmit. I also took some shots right on the floor to include more of the plain pews to offset the richness of the decorations above but it didn't work as well either.
eagle1, ysal, fc, Thanks. My first visit to this cathedral.
Jade: The problem is that the interior is lit primarily by light through the windows with a predominant blue tinge (due to the stained glass) and secondly by large incandescent lanterns (yellow light) in the side aisles.
The RAW image had a distinct blue cast (which is false) and in checking back I noticed that I changed the light balance from 3900 to 3400. I thought this more closely represented the actual scene.
I don't have much success with tone mapping. In my hands, it makes the image look very flat like a page in a book. With the camera on a tripod, I took a second exposure at a manual setting to get an image of the stained glass windows. Back home, I selected the windows and large lights and then deleted the rest of the image. I then layer what was left over my main shot, using the cursor keys to nudge it into exactly the right position. In retrospect, I should have brightened them a bit. I took this on the last day of the challenge so was a little pushed for time :-) Thanks for the comment, I hope this answers your question.
Robert: Thanks.

Surreal yet wondrous. I sense a slight artificial cast in the colour though I could be wrong. That bumped it from my no. 2 to my no. 3. Wondering how you combined the two images and if they are tone mapped.

I like the fact you didn't correct it
if it is where I think it is I have visited many years ago

I seems unfair that you had access to such an amazing place for this challenge, LOL. Beautiful, very high in my TT.

Eye candy image; nicely processed. I'm jealous that I don't have such visually rich cathedrals where I live.

What a church! Nice job of capturing this image... all the column on each side and pews at the bottom make it very busy but the well lit celling adds some peace. in TT
