Barrel Racer       ©2016 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       13th place, 52 points
1/500s, f5.6, ISO 80, 195mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Slightly cropped top and bottom, cloned out two distracting background figures.       Extra Info: If you can, please comment on how you would have improved this shot; what is lacking.

" the juxtaposition should be - or at least appear to be - accidental, not deliberate. One of the colored items might or might not be the photo's main subject, but they should be prominent enough to be obvious to the viewer.."

White horse nose, white hat, white barrel, seemed obvious enough to me but I leave that up to you. I picked white because it is the colour that most prominently ties together the three main subjects.

I thought these Rodeo shots would be easy - that's till I tried! Much harder than it first appears. You did a great job on this one - perfect timing.

Great action caught here. Probably should have gone with a less central framing.

I have to say that when I first looked at the photo, I thought the colours you were matching were the stripes of the barrels and the stands, which were not too close. The whites did not leap out at me. Perhaps if you had moved in a bit closer to eliminate some of the orange, the white would have been more predominant. That being said, the photo itself is wonderful.

rd52 I did think about it. See outtakes and below. Appreciate the comment.
fc I thought the off level and arrow added to the sense of movement.

Just wondering did you try rotating the pic to level? Just wondering. Also I might point out that white is not a color. Still a very nice shot, in my favs.

the crop should have been tighter the orange barrier is too strong and makes an arrow shape
the crop would have made more of the horse and the colour white in the title???

dk, See outtakes, the difficult clone was removing the people behind the rider! I will also show you the issue with shooting lower in outtakes. I actually cropped the heads off in the effort to eliminate the eye going there. Appreciate the feedback.

good catch, but the headless folks behind distract my eye. Eliminating them is a difficult clone. Also consider shooting from lower angle and then including the 2 intersted spectators (and will add visual interest to your shot).

ysal I think the real problem is that there is NO prominent colour except maybe shades of brown! But I still was looking for comments on how this could be better so I thought I'd enter it anyway.

Elyod Yep. I thought the same, see above.

aoc46 Yes. See above. "Ideally, the juxtaposition should be - or at least appear to be - accidental, not deliberate."

I could easily have made the red barrel yellow and the orange seats yellow in PP, or the rider's shirt for that matter, but thought that would be dishonest in the context of how you set out the challenge. Anyone with half decent skills in PP could change any solid colour to another to make a match.

My problem with this shot is that the matching whites are not the prominent color here. I see the orange fence and the red of the barrel to be prominent, and my eyes keep wandering looking for their match.

A great action shot but, the colour- matching doesn't jump out without reading the text.

To be honest, I didn't notice the whites until I read your Extra Info, but I was drawn immediately to the similarity of the background seats to the red on the barrel. A little tweaking in PP could make them a very good match. Excellent action; cropping some from from the right and bottom would move the horse away from center, improving the composition.
