Good Guys Wear White Hats       ©2016 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       14th place, 62 points
1/1300s, f7.1, ISO 200, 143mm, Manual, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: Slight crop, imported face of girl from second photo to have everyone looking, clone out distracting sign in top right corner.       Extra Info: " the juxtaposition should be - or at least appear to be - accidental, not deliberate. One of the colored items might or might not be the photo's main subject, but they should be prominent enough to be obvious to the viewer.."

White horse, white hats, white markings on calf, seemed obvious enough to me but I leave that up to you. I picked white because it is the colour that most ties together the three main compositional elements.

I've never seen so many white hats in one place. Great action shot, lots of interest and detail. High in my picks.

Maybe cropping the left hand quarter of the photo out would improve it (as the wrangler sign distracts and the rider and calf would be less central). But, excellent photo and title.

rd52 I personally would have liked just a bit more canvass to the right but wanted to fill the shot with hats and sort of felt the gate was an essential element.

fc I agree this is a much more engaging image.

Awesome shot, I think the comp would be even better if the roper weren't so centered, maybe some cropped off the left. Still a great shot.

jomari Definitely lots of colours to choose from. I thought it best to suggest my matches but others thought otherwise!

Steve I was of two minds about the yellow. I decided in the end it added depth (to a somewhat cluttered scene colour wise) and also allowed the viewer to see quickly where the rider had departed from. I would add that I think there can be a place for a busy background and for me this was one instance where it not only worked but added to the scene (compare to my open entry for example taken at the same event).

dk I actually really liked the composition so I entered this one for that reason. I'll show the full shot in outtakes and you can decide for yourself, not McDonald's but still lots of stuff.

ysal Certainly that was a concern. My focus was on a non-set up shot and I knew from the outset a small tight close up would be a lot easier to achieve the intended result.

It was actually the reds that jumped out at me, still I see what you mean. Nice capture of the action. In my faves.

Interesting action. Very busy background. The bright yellow sign draws attention from the main subject.

very nice composition overall. I think I'd prefer not quite so tight at top; a little less cropped off (provided there is not a couple McDonald's arches that would then enter field of view!)

I see what you are trying to do here, I just think there are too many other distracting colors present.

cookiejar I wondered about the yellow since it is so prominent but felt toning it down in PP would have been "dishonest" given the challenge terms to avoid "set up" shots as much as possible. I didn't want to crop it out since I felt it would unbalance the composition.

aoc46 Great topic for a challenge. No, I couldn't get any white hat in the foreground at all. I knew close up shots would be easier but I preferred to try this one out.

aKilter You know, you ARE free to ignore the comment section. : )
I expect it won't influence any discerning judge so I thought I'd set it out up front so that those who didn't see what I was aiming for would know without asking. I considered it also that someone who thought the blue coloured jeans everywhere or the brown and brown would also decide that I'd missed the match and mark me down for it but in the end, figured the judges are a sophisticated bunch. So while I don't understand your comment, I accept it as sincere and value it for that reason, and now you have my explanation of the explanation, too.

A very strong subject. Would have preferred a crop to remove the yellow on the left.

Good concept, nice action. Lots of white hats here, but a few bad guys, too. (Guess there are some in every crowd.) Any way you got have shot from somewhere that with one or more white hats in the foreground to make the 'white-hat' theme more obvious?

This is a really nicely composed action shot, that's sharp and well exposed. The matching colors are numerous and obvious, as well.

The only fly in the ointment, possibly keeping this from being my #1 favorite, is your comment: "White horse, white hats, white markings on calf, seemed obvious enough to me but I leave that up to you". You should, indeed, have left it up to us...but you didn't.
