Climbing the Tree       ©2016 wrosenthal
Panasonic DMC-FZ200       3rd place, 118 points
1/160s, f2.8, ISO 100, 380mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Cropped, exposure adjustments including color and contrast. Converted to black and white using BWStyler, emulating Plus-X film at 100 ASA, and sepia toning of the "print". All done in Photoshop CS3.       Extra Info: This reminded me of my childhood, and I decided to try to make it look like the 1940's or 50's. A kinder, gentler time perhaps.

Sorry Bill - I must have had a senior's moment there. That's what I get for commenting so late at night! Congratulations again, Bill, for a lovely step back into time.

Ha ha! Thanks for the comments. I was surprised too. Have not seen kids climbing trees for years.

Bill - Love this shot. (Please excuse Bernie. I guess no one every had the birds and bees chat with him :-).

Great job Bill, getting the nostalgic look. How did you find 3 boys in today's world without iPhones, iPods, Androids, or .... ?
(Please forgive Lo. They spell Bill differently in Canada.)

Congratulations Neil - very reminiscent of days when kids were really kids.

I relate to this too. It doesn't give me a funny smile but definitely a nostalgic one. Excellent photo.

Rather retro composition, for me that adds a nostalgic edge. I suppose the activity of climbing a tree is retro too.

This evokes good memories; a very natural pose. I'm guessing you used a burn tool on the leg for the boy in the middle, unfortunately it leaves a dark smudge. The composition adds a lot to this shot and draws us into the picture. Well done. In my favs.

I think this photograph really captures what being a child is all about. I like the composition and the relaxed poses. There seems to be a bit of a problem with the pp, especially with the middle figure.

The soft dreamy quality in this photo really enhances the nostalgic theme. The diagonal composition also works well.

Some problems with the harsh light, but a charming study of childhood. I love the pensive expression of the top child's face. In my top few.

Kids at play are always appealing, but softer, less-contrasty light might make this scene seem more kind and gentle. Have to wonder what the middle kid is pointing at - maybe he's suggesting that the tree at right be cropped out, as would I.
